Thanks for the response. Those are good examples. Better in fact then what is provided by the docs. I will often need to go elsewhere, usually cgwiki to get clarification that is not provided by the Houdini docs.
I disagree that with you that the name of the function rotate just “dose what it describes”. In fact to use the function you need an identity matrix as an input. An example should be given in help card. I can't think of a better place to to have an exhaustive expanation.
I also disagree with your premise that that wanting better documentation is due to lack of math understanding. Actually the opposite is true. If good examples are given in the docs those who are learning Houdini and the necessary math concepts will be able to so faster. Which in turn will allow Houdini to become more useful to more people. Which seems like a good goal.
The Houdini docs are lacking in many areas. The rotate function being one of the most glaring examples. I think the creators of Houdini are aware of this problem and will be addressing it as i'm sure there goal is to make the software more accessible. Which will have the added benefit of reducing peoples inclination to leave snarky comments on there forum.

Is it just me or are some of the Houdini documentation cards way to minimal? i'm leaning houdini and it would be nice to be able to look up a function in the docs and get enough info to actually use it. For instance:

http://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini/vex/functions/rotate.html [www.sidefx.com]

it says:
Applies a rotation to the given matrix.

thanks super helpful… An example would be nice.
