Mantra vs AMD Threadripper 2990wx Dec. 23, 2018, 12:19 a.m.

pbowmar
On Linux (Centos 7.5) with 24 core (48 virtual) Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2687W v4 @ 3.00GHz rendering the file to a local disk to avoid network contention.

All times “Total Wall Clock”, all load times 3/4 of a second. Tile size 16 for all.

-48 threads: 01:11
-32 threads: 01:16
-24 threads: 01:22 0.293 secs/thread
-16 threads: 01:52 0.143 secs/thread
-12 threads: 02:27 0.08 secs/thread

In theory, running 2 frames on my local box is optimal with “hyperthreading” giving almost no help.

FWIW

Cheers,

I thought changing the number of buckets to the number of threads was better for performance. Have you experimented?

Solvers acting strangely. Dec. 6, 2018, 3:24 a.m.

I am using H17.0.421

1. Solvers are still calculating despite the disable solver toggle being active. (Annoying because the sims is cached.)
2. I am getting crashes when i need to interrupt a calculation.

Houdini 17 Mac OS Mojave Nov. 18, 2018, 12:18 a.m.

I was having problems with H16 on OSX in the past, has H17 been better. I keep hearing its because Apple is switching to metal so I would expect similar performance since it seems like OGL is not being developed any further.
