I've been experimenting a lot with Houdini Heightfield for my shortfilm. I learned so much, I figured I could share a series of tutorials about environment and why not getting you excited about making terrains in Houdini !

Part 1: Concept, File Organization, Heightfield Setup

In this video I am walking you through the node network, and try to show you an optimized way to approach a large scene. Also breaking down the different steps of making the base for the main terrain in foreground.

Part 2: Dune Setup and Tool Creation

In this video I am breaking down how I generated dune driven by curves. We are using a bunch of different techniques like sweep operation, pointvop network to reach the desired result.

Part 3: Procedural Realistic Ridge

Breaking down how I generated the ridge ("volcanic wall") on top of the dune we made in second part. This may give you a good approach to generate some rock model within houdini.

Part 4: Epic Lighting with Mantra

I am showing here one way to setup lighting and atmospheric effect for large scale environment using the default render engine : Mantra. Covering different aspect of lighting workflow such as light linking, creating gobo/blockers, setting up some fog layers.
