Full Version: How do I 'pin' a vertex to use in Copy to Points SOP?

If for example I want to copy a geometry in the 'Copy to Points' SOP. It copies the geo relative to its centroid.

But say I want to copy the geometry where the centroid is pinned to a vertex or around a selection of vertices, how would I do that?

I tried a few things I looked up online, but I always end up with the same situation where the geometry center mass is the origin point.

The closest I came to a solution was using the 'ch' function in the Center dialog boxes but couldn't figure out how to get the copy to points to use the vertex as the origin of the geometry. It seems like an oversight because there are so many uses for wanting to do this. But it also could be i'm missing an obvious solution here, so please forgive me if there is an easy solution.

Transform your source geometry? Not sure what your setup is, but you could simply edit your pivot (use point snapping to snap it to your target point), and then with grid snapping, snap your geo to the origin.

That’s one of the things I tried but copy to points still uses the middle “mass” of the geo.

I’m modelling a wooden wagon (picture reference below)and there are braces along side. I’ve already done it another way by using the Copy SOP and Transform SOP after giving up on the Copy to Points SOP. So this is more about learning for future projects.

The Copy to Points SOP places the copied object based on that objects' position relative to the origin. So simply position the object you want copied so that the vertex you highlight above is at position 0,0,0. You can do that with a transform SOP.
