I am having a bear of a time installing my copy of houdini on my new computer. I have upgraded hardware after almost 8 years. Ths is not to say I used Houdini for that long, however. The install process says “cannot connect to the license server.” I have no Idea how to feed it my keys and have the app run. Any help would be hot. If you need more details, please ask and I'll post asap.

I'm pretty sure you can't run Houdini under Xfce. You'll need either KDE or Gnome unless I'm mistaken.

can you check if the sesinetd process is running? See this FAQ for more details:

Also, you can send the diagnostic info to the apprentice@sidefx for more help with licensing. You can get the diagnostic in the License Manager (
hkey [
sidefx.com]) in the main menu under View > Diagnostic Info.

Oh.. wow you can use Xfce then. That is pretty cool.
I guess once you get it working, let us know how it goes. I've always wanted to try it out.

Hmmm Alan, then i must be dreaming everyday behind my computer…

As far as i can tell it runs pretty smooth (in my dreams). Tried houdini on a lot of WM's and the only one that had issues was E17.

I run it in Fluxbox sometimes and I didn't encounter problems (Ubuntu 7.10 64 bit).

I may have to try that out. I really like the minimal look of the Fluxbox themes that I've seen so far.
