Hello.
I am running Houdini 6.0.286 apprentice on Debian 3.0 testing/unstable (Knoppix hd-install in fact) with various window managers and desktop environments, all with XFree 4.3.0 and nVidia driver version 4363.
Houdini installed just fine to my home directory, and i am able to launch the app. However, the interface behaves strange as it does not correctly redraw areas i moved over with the mouse, showing either a black or a grey square or sometimes my desktop bg image (I think). This happens in all areas (menus, inspectors, modeling pane, …). I tried to follow various suggestions like chanking the window manager, but nothing helped. I won't switch to Redhat though.
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Hubertus

try hiding the “taskbar” or whatever this is called in linux. This helped in my case.
Good Luck

thank you, but this did ot help either.
Actually, Houdini doesn't even maximize correctly in this case, but i saw a topic that explains how to resolve this little problem.
Still, redraw is just plain wrong and really annoying. Any other suggestions?
Thanks for help in advance,
Hubertus

Although Debian is not an officially supported Linux distribution, we've recently had reports of Houdini working well under Debian/Woody. See:

Maybe you could try starting X with:
startx – -logverbose 5
to see if there's any related warnings/errors.

Good to hear that Houdini works under Debian in general. I'd love to join the party….
Looking at my XFree-logfile at /var/log/XFree86.0.log (that's the right one?) I found only some complaints about modlines beeing out of range and some font directories missing. All the rest like loading the drivers etc. seems to be fine. I'm a newbie to everything XFree, so are there any other logs that document what's going on once the server is started?
Houdini is the only programm having this kind of redrawing problems btw. :?
Thanks for looking at my problem!

But did you change your log verbose level to 5?
