Full Version: Displacement of geometry

Hello all,

I was wondering if there was a well known protocol for displacing geometry (say a grid) with a height map (say the greyscale image from topographical data).

I posted this over at odforce last week but was unable to affect the suggestion.

I have read quite a bit about doing displacement at the shader level but I was hoping to displace the actual geometry in the viewport. In 3DS Max its simple. Put down a plane, crank up the resolution, drop a displacement modifier on it and choose the height map.

But I don't want to use Max. I would like to do this in Houdini and for the life of me I just can't seem to get a good way to do this nailed down. Any help would be very appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,
If I understand you correctly that can quite easily be achieved with a VOP Sop.

I've attached a simple scene with a VOP which displaces the R channel of an image in the Y direction.

Awesome. I knew it was a VOP based deal and that is what I got out of odforce but I just couldn't figure out how to make it work. Thank you very much.
