For those Mac users out there who are keen to jump on the latest version of OSX (Mountain Lion), here's some things you'll need to do to for icons and docs:

Apple no longer includes X11 with its operating system. You'll need to get xquartz - the community supported version of X11 for OSX.

PROBLEM: Houdini has no icons or Houdini cannot run because it failed to generate icons.
SOLUTION: Download and install XQuartz from http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/26593/xquartz/ [macupdate.com]

PROBLEM: Help does not work. Houdini complains about “no such file or directory” for pyconfig.h.
SOLUTION: Create a symbolic link to pyconfig.h so that Houdini can find the file. Open a Terminal app and type the following commands:
sudo mkdir -p /usr/include/python2.6
sudo ln -sf /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/include/python2.6/pyconfig.h /usr/include/python2.6/pyconfig.h

this info is much appreciated. i am actually considering 10.8 because of its video drivers.

there are a few newer vid cards that are enabled now with this new release.

the speed of my old ati is kindof wearing thin. lol.

Houdini works fine but if I try to start the help file I get:

"cannot connect to the server http://localhost:0/start/ [localhost]"

speaking of Mountain Lion, wasn't Mountain Lion supposed to support a more recent version of openGL than 2.1? .. my macBook still sais I have 2.1 .. I remember having a chat with Jeff about it and got all excited..
I'm not trying to hijack the topic but I know you guys have been very close with Apple on this matter, what happened?

Hi,

i'm running Houdini 11 Apprentice HD and I have installed X11 but I am still getting an immediate crash after I start the program. It starts the load screen and after a little while pops up with a autosave file report in /tmp.

Any other possible solutions for that? Or do I need H12?

I also upgraded to Mountain Lion in 10 days before my Masters thesis deadline… ops:

Thanks,

Billy.

Hi,
I ported to Lion and found the failing help and Python more than annoying especially when your about to start a job and things are expected to work. So after 2 days fiddling around I got it all working and made an idiots guide

I hope this helps

To answer my own question I just installed the most recent build of Houdini 11 and Mountain Lion had no problems starting up and running correctly.

I'll see if there is any issues with Help.
rum
No issue with Mountain Lion here yet. Actually I did have the issue with help server but new installation of xcode and command line tools(xcode/preferences/downloads/CommandLineTools/) helped.

Does the OpenGL 3.2 Viewport work with Mountain Lion?

seems to still be only 2.1

I am having issues with Mountain Lion. I am missing icons even though I installed XQuartz. Is there something specific I need to do beside installing it?

I am having the same problem and can't fix it. Is there someone who i can hire to install houdini for me?

It would be a shame to have to give up on Houdini all together simply because I can't get it to work on my Mac.

I get this for some reason when I switch to flat wire shaded
*OSX ML 10.8.2*

What are you specs?

@Marinello
Glad to see you here Did you manage to start Houdini?
SreckoM
There was 10.8.3 release with new drivers apparently. Is there better OpenGL support there? Does anyone knows something about it?
