Ok so i've been scouring the net for a tutorial, but couldn't find any..so i decided to take at stab at it myself trying to make a nuclear explosion. ‘I’ve been using houdini for 11 months, so there's a huge amount of stuff i still don't know, so forgive my ignorance in advance. I'm trying to keep the ‘Stalk’ of the explosion to move upward without dissipating too much and causing the smoke to make that weird shape in my pic below. Also i'm trying to keep the mushroom cloud more “mushroomy”, i know that's not even a word.. lol Below is the hip file. My render pic is the first pic. The second picture is what i would like to accomplish. I know i'm close, but if aaaaaanyone can help me, or point me in the right direction on how to accomplish this task i would be most appreciative. Thanks guys :
I updated the pic below as of January 15 2016, so far at 4 seconds into the sim this is what i have its a low res screen shot at 720p

I'm a bit of a novice too so cannot help beyond suggesting that somehow you need more force in a central cylindrical fashion. Much more than anything normal, and maybe that will help? Apologies, I have limited knowledge of physics AND Houdini and you probably thought of this already?

hey 5dn any bit of info or ideas help, so i appeciate the response..i definitely think so too, i've been adjusting dissipation , bouyancy etc..at one point i thought i got it.. but by frame 155 the stalk of the explosion had totally disconnected from the emitter.. so it was back to trying to get just the right amount of force from the emitter to keep the explosion rising up without, blowing out of proportion or having it dissipate to quickly causing the stalk to look weird while the mushroom is rising

difficult stuff. not really sure.

Lol ..yes difficult maybe for us.. But I,m hoping some Houdini experts can chime in

Have you got the correct scale in the scene?

Hey 5dn ..do you mean like meters? How do I check the scale? And what would be the correct scale for something like a nuclear explosion?

yes. I do mean meters. I believe the grid is made of meters AND a nuclear explosion would be kilometers across??

ok i think it may already be in meters let me check first. i'm sure you're right tho. i updated what i have so far in the pic at the top of this thread

Ok I see it's already set to 1 unit = 1 meter ..in the preferences panel inside Houdini hip ..there's also settings for kilo meters as well..so what should I set this too. Because when I set it to kilometers it changed to 1000 meters = 1 unit in measure

I'm not really sure, I'm just sure that scene scale is very important in Houdini as it is renowned for being physically accurate.

yes i think you're right

although a guy at my school disagrees I'd also bet the physics of a nuclear explosion are very different from a regular one and for you to get this right will require some seriously nerdy tweakage of the sim. sorry I cannot help. NUKE PRESET side effects?!

It's coming along pretty good I'm just tweaking minor stuff and re-simming to see if I can get it to look slightly better than what I posted in the updated screenshot at the top of the thread
