Hello I changed my shell via the chsh command. This put me at the /bin/csh prompt. I didn't have to type it.
So when I try to cd /usr/hfs5.5
I get an error
chsh: shell must be full path name.
Is /usr/hfs5.5 not the full path name for the install of Houdini?

After issuing the chsh command, the /bin/csh prompt tells you which prompt you're currently using & it's not a real prompt.
Example, you can type /bin/tcsh to change it to tcshell. If you can press ENTER, the shell will remain as cshell.
Once done, you can then cd to /usr/hfs5.5 to source the houdini_setup file. I would suggest putting an alias to source houdini_setup or set it up in the .cshrc/.tcshrc file. It'll save a lot of typing.
