Hello everyone! I am glad to join the Houdini 2025 Game Art Challenge. I want to make a tool for Unreal Engine that will allow generating various rocks with vegetation and waterfalls. I want my tool to allow doing this in the simplest possible way and with the possibility of a large number of variations. Most likely, I will apply in all three categories, since I will have the same tool, generation and effects of waterfalls. This is the maximum task. )) For inspiration, I made a selection of references.

So... According to my idea, the artist in the Unreal Engine scene creates simple forms of future rocks from ordinary primitives. The artist also uses splines to mark the places where he would like to see waterfalls. Based on this data, my generator creates a rock with a material that takes into account the surface features of the rock itself. The generator will also have a number of settings that will allow you to make different variations with vegetation on this rock. Since the terms of the competition do not allow using third-party textures, I had to work with COP Network for the first time. The result was quite acceptable. Now I am working with vegetation and using the Houdini tree generator, which is also a first for me, but the process is creative and interesting.

Generated trees for my asset. It wasn't easy, I had to rack my brains, since it was the first time for me. I also plan to add bushes, ferns and grass.

Finished working on the vegetation. Added single stones, bushes, ferns and grass. You can play with the amount and location of everything in the asset settings, depending on the parameters everything will be automatically rebuilt. I'm starting with the water. Also not an easy task, since I still don't quite understand how to make it beautiful using Niagara and so that, if possible, all the settings remain inside my asset.

A small update... Generated a mesh for a waterfall. Now the task is to make a beautiful material for the water using Flow Map.

Continuing experiments with water... When transferring the Flow Map to Unreal Engine, there are some artifacts, I think they are related to the UV. Unfortunately, in all examples on the Internet, a river is created along one spline and there are some ways to solve such artifacts. In my case, the waterfalls can have several branches. Now I will focus on creating a water material so that the waterfalls fit into the overall concept of the rocks.

I created a water material and experimented a bit with the settings. Now I want to add splash effects.

I continue my experiments with water. I added splash generation where the water flow collides with rocks and the shore. For the splashes themselves, I generated a splash of water in Houdini and transferred it to Niagara with the help of VAT.

Work with the waterfall is nearing its logical conclusion. Due to the large number of splashes, the FPS was dropping, so with the help of Houdini I made a flipbook texture for the splash to optimize the effect and replaced the splashes from meshes with splashes on sprites. I added turbulent streams on steep slopes and fine water dust. It remains to think about how to design the very bottom of the waterfall.

This is the waterfall I ended up with... Now I want to work on the details of the entire asset.

Hello everyone! Completely redid the algorithms for the waterfall, as I was not satisfied with the previous one. Now all the streams are clearly separated and have their own direction along the original splines. This allowed me to make the water flood more believable and beautiful. I am happy with the result. I also added small details to the stones and the ground. Now the whole rock looks more detailed and not blurry, as before. I think this is my last message in the WIP section, as I have completely finished working on my asset. Good luck to everyone and strength to finish your work and post beautiful results! See you in the SUBMISSIONS!
