I'm trying to modify geometry for a LOP with materials assigned via a GeomSubset derived from shop_materialpath.
Exporting SOP->LOP has an option to preserve partition attributes, but there's no mechanism I can find to associate GeomSubsets back with Groups when doing LOP->SOP.

Is there a way built in for this, or a plan to make one?

When going from LOP -> SOP, partition subsets will be converted back to a string / int attribute, and other types of subsets will be converted back to primitive groups.
In your case I would expect going from LOP -> SOP to produce a shop_materialpath attribute?
