Hello Appersoft,
very nice fire indeed.. Maybe it still can be distinguished from real fire, but it is very close to it, and it looks very well..
Thank you, and have a nice day,
Rene.

Hello Wolfwood,
Yeah, not you, but Val mentioned that generating afterburn like effects with i3D is easy. Maybe he has some good experience and good results with Houdini in i3D. I would love to see some realistis i3D results.
With regards,
Rene.

are you guys sure, that what you can do with Afterburn, you can do very ewsity with i3D as well?
I would say i3D is much more difficult, but it may be, because I dont know i3D.
Peple talk a lot about i3D - does Houdini Contain all the tools to make new 3D volumetric textures - i3D, or are i3D textures supposed to be brougt to Houdini from another specialized i3D package if such exists?
Personally to me, i3D seems to be much more difficult than Afterburn, but I did not get too deep into i3D.

Rene.

Hi Jason,
what a beautiful set of dynamics animation. especially the burning paper and liquids. I have not even thought, something like that is really possible. Who knows if he used Houdini for generating that dynamics. :-)
Hello Symek, :-)
I admire your observation skills. :-) Exactly as you said, I prepare for a project that will take about a year to accomplis.
I had a feeling that asking here would cost me less time as learning all these complicated tools besides XSI, I already know.(Houdini, Maya, Renderman Shader Language, necessary math, 3DMax with Plugins) - this all could take me many months to master deeply enough, so I would be able to create my own opinion.
But, yeah, thank you for your advice. After some time, I must agree and that only I can elaborate judgement what tool best suits my needs, because only I know the project.
I should have enough information to start testing application after application.
Thank you again.
Have a nice weekend.
Rene.

Hello All,
thank you for great responses. All were beneficial to me… I did not know that i3d can be so strong. after reading Magic of Houdini, I will take a close look at it.
Lulu116, I haven't had a chance to work with it. It is a 3DMax plug in , and it will arrive to market sometimes in this year's fall. I wish again, Houdini could do such amazing flame effects. I think, if this plug-in is released, there will be no more need of better more advanced flame SFX, because, this will give us all, we might think of.

Jesta, hello..
Ok I will read about i3d. Thank you for good tip.
Just for motivation, look how powerful 3DMax's FlumeFX plugin is.
http://www.afterworks.com/FumeFX.asp [afterworks.com]
I can't bellieve, that something like that exists, and it is for 3DMax platform, which, I would say, is the weakest from all tools in professional 3D.

ReggieFourmyle,
oh yeah, XSI has particle effects. It has both, particle engine with dynamics and simulation and it has built in shaders you can use with particles.
However, another question is where these XSI particle modules stand in comparison with other competitive packages. Although it is very difficult to compare them, if a person has not mastered particle engines in all competitive packages. This would be very difficult task.
Although XSI users bellieve that XSI's particle engine should be better, rumors say, the next version of XSI will have much better particle tools.
Bye.

Aracid,
thank you very much for valuable information. I will do what I can. Apparently, MyrtleSoftare is commercialpackage. Is there any chance, that something like that would be free?

Hello,
I've just purchased a book on Houdini and started reading it. There is not too much information on shader creation.
I've been thinking if it is difficult to create Afterburn(3DMax) or BinaryAlchemy Volume(XSI) like shader that would work with Houdini?
It should probably be Renderman shading language compatible and therefore, it should be renderable with both Mantra and PRman.
Thanks, with regards…

That is very good.. However, if anybody know where are 3Delight's pros over PRMan, it would be good to know.

Looking at the price per licence, 3Delight must be very high quality package. What does it offer that PRMan does not have? Where are its advantages over PRMan? Is it support of Raytracing?

Particle effects include a wide variety of effects. Volumetric effects is just one category of particle effects.
Parcile effects can simulate dust, sand, stars, grass, water, fire, hair, etc.. Clouds and smoke are examples of volumetric effects.
Very simple answer to your simple question.

Hello JColdrick,
yes, I noticed that some animations, especially fireballs were real explosions.
Howeve from those I asked, none of me seem to be real life animation. http://www.finallight.com/orders/_FRT1.ASP [finallight.com] They all are CGI, i bet. I looked at Maya Fluid, but the images I saw seemed to me too plastic, comparing to those from Finalight.
Yes, you were right. The point is time, and the same effect might take 10 times longer to create with one tool than with another. This is very valid argument why to be interested in appropriate production tool.
Anyway, if anybody would have an idea what tools suits best to create such fire shots in the most efficient way, it would be interesting to discuss it.
Thank you and have a nice day,
Rene.

Diula,
I've just noticed that 3Delight is a free package. What a surprise. Thanks for good tip.
Indeed, developers claim on 3Delight website, that the following dog's head has been rendered with 3Delight. http://www.3delight.com/Gallery/Collection/01A/Bailey_HR.htm [3delight.com]
That dog's head seem to me to be so real, that I can hardly bellieve it is a render. Any thoughts?

Hello,
A day before yesterday, I found a site that sells computer generated fire, explosion, and another amazing effects: www.finalight.com
Especially, these 37 computer generated seamless fire animations caught my attention:
http://www.finallight.com/orders/_FRT1.ASP [finallight.com]
Since I saw them, I've been thinking what tool did they use to generate them: Is it possible it was Houdini, or is that fire a typical output of Maya Fluids, or is it possible that a simple 2D particle engine like Particle Illusion was used to generate those shots? I bellieve, that different packages add a typical look its renders, and it could be possible to guess what tool was used to generate that fire.
I wrote to that company immediatelly, however, I doubt they would respond - its their know how, and they will hardly reveal what tools they use.
With regards,
Rene.

Hello circusmonkey,
Yeah, i am asking on both places, one is devoted to XSI another to Houdini, because I want to find a comparison of the two tools and want to hear opinions from both sides. From outside they both, Houdini and XSI, seem to me to serve the same purpose, and therefore, yes, I try to compare them, to find the one that better suits my needs.
As far as my experience in 3D, I received first prizes in an international magazine about 6 years ago in LightWave. So far, I still work in 3D and therfore I wish you do not confuse me with a person who do not know 3D at all.. The fact is, I have never worked in movie industry, and never used particle effects neither standalone shaders, just Hypervoxel from LightWave to create volumetric effects.
Besides, asking questions that are elementary to you, will definitely help others to understand things, because, I bet, they will help others too.
With regards,
Rene.

Today I will order the book The Magic of Houdini. Relating to workflow in Houdini, if I create and animate particles, it is only a half work done, and then I have to write appropriate shader to the particle effect. Is that correct?
Where Houdini artists usually take amazing shaders from? Do they write them, or is it possible to configure volumetric shaders, lens flares, etc.. directly in Houdini please? In XSI there are already finished shaders like BA_Volume, however because I have never writen any shader, I am affraid, it will need a lot of math knowledge.
