Thanks so much for the reply twod!! Somehow I should have been more specific and explained that I am on a MacBook Pro late 2009 series. I would have loved to hear your take on the Nvidia 9400M/9600GT for MacBook Pros. Surely, in your line of work you guys must strictly work on the Mac Pro's instead of the Mac Book Pro. But, the reason I pulled the trigger on Mac's flagship laptop is because it was important that I am mobile. Have you worked on Mac Book Pros, and if so, what is your take on them? I need to know so that I can make my next purchase. And, again as you may already know, there were no options to opt for a better graphics card on Mac's so called flagship laptop. Again, thanks for the reply. And, it only felt like this took a long time to fix because a lot of us just want to work.. I've been following Houdini since version 4 and it is one amazing piece of software and it is worth the wait. I just wish Apple and Nvidia would stop with all the politics and just build awesome machines.
Best Regards,

Just out of curiosity, are you guys at liberty to discuss what was causing the Nvidia/Mac Book Pro flickering issue? The reason I'm asking is because Macs are pretty stable in terms of architecture, however, I was pretty disappointed that when configuring my custom late 2009 machine to pretty much run Houdini, there were no options to choose a better graphics card, and albeit from a different manufacturer, i.e ATI. I know there are many people that are partial to Nvidia, but I would love to know if this was resolved by simply utilizing less memory from the actual graphics card, or was it simply a software issue.
Best Regards,
P.S. Thank you SESI for the quick resolution in this.

I resolved this by simply going to the folder and adding Adminstrator and everyone Read and Write access to the file. Afterwards, all was smooth sailing!!

Forgive me for asking, but what steps have you taken to delete the application? I'm not in front of my Mac right now, but I'm pretty sure instead of dragging and dropping the application to the Trash bin, you have to use the Houdini uninstaller that is found in the Houdini applications folder. Afterwards, you have to make sure you delete the folder that serves your licenses or that will conflict with any new installs that you install on that computer. Let me know how you fair out, I would love to help you.

Hello Mike,
Can you supply us with the number to call to make an impact on getting this flickering issue resolved? I have someone who works for 3D World Magazine, and they've been trying to write an article angled on graphic cards benchmarks as it relates to Nvidia and laptops specifically. I have to agree that not having an option to opt for a better graphics card configuration as t relates to MacBook Pros and Macs alltogether is rather discouraging, especially with the fact that these are flagship machines more than capable of running this software. Please Let me know what phone number to call. I have about 25 people fired up to call and 1 that is willing to write a both positive and negative article on Macs flagship laptops.
Best Regards,
I'm sure Apple Care is an option but they tend to screen their calls and some of the circles I've talked to haven't even heard of Sidefx Software ,which is very dismaying!!

It's refreshing to know that they're addressing these issues. The Apple Support forums are packed with people complaining about Snow Leopard and its graphic shortcomings. More options when selecting graphics cards for their Mac Book Pro series needs to be implemented. But, rest assured, I know SESI is working on it, its just a matter of time and Apple getting their ducks in a row with their so called flagship machines.
Best Regards,
P.S. Would you mind posting your system specs? I would gladly appreciate it.

Did it get extremely hot, and what is an acceptable temperature for the machine? Would you be able to tell me how I go about checking the temperature of the machine, or do I have to get the istat widget?

That's refreshing to know that we have the same machine, I'm so happy I'm not alone. Other than the flickering, what has been your take on the overall performance as a benchmark/ Have you done any heavy duty simulations on it? Have you rendered any long sequences? I did observe that you are using 10.0.410. Just wondering because, so far, other than the flickering, the software seems to be very stable. I have not seen any crashes.

I am having this issue now on 10.0.417. I am on A Mac Boo Pro 3.06 @4 gb ram on the Nvidia 9600. Menus and submenus however are optimal. I will post more observations as I continue to work.

That would make a lot of us extremely happy, especially those considering purchasing Houdini outright for a software now reasonable in price. Thank you SESI!!

I am dying to know how painful it was, and the most important question I have is can you import files from Ubuntu while in Windows and OSX? An example of what I'm trying to ask is, can you, after having rendered a Houdini scene in Ubuntu, import the files into a program like Final Cut Pro, After Effects, etc, while in either OSX or Windows? Or must you do everything in Ubuntu? A reply would be greatly appreciated. This is a great topic.

Not that it should be considered a major platform switch, but does anyone know if there will be support for Snow Leopard upon its release in September?

Thank you much for the reply xtimmyx, as someone previously noted, the 2.93 17" unibody's are having problems with their nvidia gfx chipsets. I'm ready to buy but i dont want to be a unibody beta tester, Id rather be a unibody beta tester. Very frustrating because Apple hasn't formally announced any resolution.

I'm shocked there were no replies for this as yet Lyn, but for someone who's on a Mac platform, which ships with version 2.5, it would be great to have step by step instructions on how to set up version 2.6 on OSX. Sorry if this is no help to you, but I would love to learn Python. I've lanched it in the terminal on OSX, but its only version 2.5. And, I have browsed the web and am not comfortable with tinkering with some of the instructions i was given. Thanks much in advance for any help.

Hello djorzgul,
What is your system spec? Are you on a Mac Book Pro as well? I would love to know what your full system spec is, including memory, graphics card, processor, version of OSX, and any problems that you encountered while installing Houdini on your MAC. Please respond, I am eager to get to work!!!

Will there be or is there already support or tests being run for the new Mac Book Pro's which are running both NVIDIA's 9400M and 9600M GT graphic processors. These systems seem to be very promising and seem to offer many advantages for running Houdini in terms of mobility, the only problem though is that Houdini seems to be having refreshing issues with panes and the only resolutions seems to be to restart the application, and nothing has really been said or done about correcting these issues; I stand corrected. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Was this issue ever resolved? I am thinking of getting almost the exact same machine with almost the exact configuration, specifically to run Houdini. I was also wondering if getting 8 GB's of memory is worth it or should I get Apple's $2800.00 Nvidia card with 4 GB's of memory instead. I hope this gets resolved soon, that is, if it isn't already. ? Continue the awesome work SESI!

Hello,
You are definitely correct in your assumption. There is and HDK toolkit for OSX as of release 9.5.163. There is more information on it in the Houdini 9.5 Public Beta section, now locked, down below. Please note
“All of the developer tools are included with every machine on the install DVD. They are not installed by default.
GCC is the default compiler for OS X. All of the tools are free.”
