Bump!
I am looking for the exact same issue. Does anyone know a way to read Maya cache+geo files without an existing FBX?
thanks

Hi
The sample by brian is giving me error
“mantra: UV rendering unsupported with ray tracing.” I tried other engines as well and does not seem to change the result.

Go to file–> new operator type –> shop type. Then in the network type, pick GLSL shader
What daa? Wow, amazing. Thanks for the tip. That is cool indeed.

Hey thanks.
I have turned it into a VopSop and gets the message across in the SOP context so either way is cool. Thanks again for the idea and the implementation.
Btw is it possible to write GLSL shaders for Houdini?

Hi
Is it possible to use Matcap images as textures for the viewport or for rendering? I am mostly talking about the shading method Zbrush uses which is shading objects based on spherical images.
thanks

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Why shouldn't I character model?

I know this is counter productive. But I usually do my modeling with max or maya / ZB.
But I want to eliminate the hassle of using so many softwares. I was thinking of making Houdini my main source of everything + ZB.
Can you guys tell me why I shouldnt character/organic model in Houdini if I already know Maya and Max workflows?
You can definetely use Houdini for modelling. It is not designed for organic modelling but it has all the tools and more to do organic stuff. I would not model highres models in Houdini(it might get tedious to use the procedural approach), but you can make your cages in Houdini and detail in Zbrush.
Technical Discussion » Shader view shows black?

Hi
Everytime I create a new material and select it, the shader view object turns black. I have used shader view before with exact same steps and it was working fine. Right now, it feels very slow and it shows the primitives in pure black. I cannot even get simple “clay” material work with it.
I am under h11
Does anyone else have the same problem?
edit:It looks like the shader view does not like the new surfacemodel vop.
thanks

Sure HD is a steal but the thing is that the jump to the next level of cheapest Houdini licence is steeeeep. I am not complaining about their pricing scheme, they can decide howeverever they want. But it would have been nice to have some inbetween.
Maybe modular plugin method might work. So you buy HD version but then if you need limited fbx you buy the fbx plugin.

Just for the record, I have found the culprit. It was a mouse application that I have installed sometime ago called “mouseemu”. Uninstalling it resolved the problem. It is quite weird that this thing only caused problem under Houdini. Anyways it seems to work now. This was an easy fix.

Hi
Thanks for the quick follow up.
That did not resolve my problem unfortunately. I also disabled compiz, that did not change the result either.

Hi
]I just installed Houdini(Apprentice 32) on Ubuntu. Everything works fine except that the screen update is very chokky-laggy when I try to rotate my scene with space+left mouse. It feels like the navigation just does not want to work.
When I press Esc and rotate my scene with mouse, it is just fine. I really have no idea what might cause such weird issue.]
I am using it on macbook pro
Any ideas?
thanks

Hi Edward
Sorry about the confusion, it is even confusing for me. I have been using 3d apps since 90s, normally I should be able to articulate it better I will try to come up with a better screenshot and example
thanks again

Bizarre,
it works for a moment then things get messy if I change those settings multiple times. No idea really.
One other thing is that if I have normal set to smooth, selected set to flat in a fresh Houdini start it works fine, however the second I am in pirimitive mode, I get flat shaded selections but smooth shaded object domain(the selected geometry).

Hi
Thanks for the tip. That is very nice and elaborate.
The only thing is that the selected geometry does not like anything beside smooth shaded. When I change the “selected” draw method to “flat wire shaded” or wireframe for example, it stays at smooth shaded. maybe a bug?

Hi
Is it possible to disable wireframe for unselected geometry? I just want wireframe to be shown only on the selected geomtry, the others will be shaded but no wireframe overlay.
thanks

Hi
I have started Houdini recently. I am enjoying it alot, however I canot figure out a permanent mirror modelling solution. At the moment I am using negative scaled instancing which works ok but the problem is that the middle points never sticks to x axis
Can someone give me a simple step by step guide to creating a successful mirror network that would work in any condition please? it should work in situations like keeping the middle points snap to x=0, having shaded view on both sides etc. I do not mind having a seam in the middle, but if there is no way that is fine too. And naturally I do not want to keep moving my mirror sop to the end of the network to keep both sides updated properly
I did try the replied post in this topic but I cannot make it work. So I would really appreciate some basic guidance here
thanks
