first of all, great job so far!
I'm having some problems running it though. If I directly use your .dll, houdini closes as soon as it opens, opening a console window that I can't read fast enough.
So I poked around in the source code and commented out these lines in SOP_Main.C:
/*
void newRenderHook(GR_RenderTable *table)
{
GR_Fluid *hook = new GR_Fluid;
table->addHook(hook, GR_RENDER_HOOK_VERSION);
}
*/
Now I can open houdini without crashing, load the sop, run the sim, and see the volumes in the viewport. The problem is that it won't preview (using your preview switch), which I'm guessing is what the render hook was for.
any ideas?
P.S. Also, It crashes every time I go over 243 divisions. It runs stable so far anything below that. I'm running win 7 64 bit, and fermi quadro 4000
Update: it is an out of memory error in fluid3D.cu, line 1275… guess that's the limit of 2 gb ram on the card?

Is the next version of Houdini going to compile with VS 2008 (VS 9), or still be linked to the libraries of 2005 (VS 8)? I vote for moving to 2008.

I'd like to do something like polysplit or cut from point to point, or edge to edge, in a python sop. The only way I can think to do it at the moment is to store the info from the existing geometry, then create the points and polygons anew.
Is there a better way?

I see a GPU fluids checkbox in the solver… is it implemented yet? if so, what can I do to test that out?

Also, the list of commands in readme.txt is incomplete; here is the actual list of commands that needed to be typed.

Hi, Thanks so much for releasing this! I'm checking it out, and it looks like the compile and installation was successful, but when I open the example file, the Sop/Bullet_Basic otl is missing. Is there an external otl that should be included also?

Is there any way to change the vops global variables labels back to abbreviations…?
Its slowing me down a little bit, the words don't fit and also have many similarities so I have to zoom way in to see it..

Hi, I'd like to disconnect the outputs of some selected nodes… but I can't find a hou.Node.setoutput … there's only setinput.
so is the only way to find the node that it is connected to, then run a setinput(None) on that other node's input?

Hi Mario,
Yeah its really weird. I've never had an example file just not work before like this, everything I've tried in houdini on this computer has worked for months now. the PC file is written fine and everything. Using H10.0.334, winxp 64 sp2, I tried to render it several ways, pressing the render button, rendering from the viewport using the icon… downloaded the file again and clicked render without changing anything….
Thanks for downloading and checking it again though, I'll try to figure out the problem on my end.

Hi Mario,
I took a look at the shader inside the file you posted, and it looks really intriguing. Thanks for posting it! However, when I clicked render, all I got was a black image, yet the glacier's outline was in the alpha channel. The point cloud was being generated correctly, so I'm not sure what the problem is with it.
(I opened the hip file from flyingc and it rendered with no problem)
I would really like to examine what was done inside those reflected light and transmission loops more closely.

Technical Discussion » sequence blend in a delayed load style procedural?

after some further research, I found that this could probably be done with an hscript procedural. However, the hscript procedural is quite slow.
So, a faster solution would be to create my own standalone C++ program to blend the geometry, right? Are there any other alternatives? And, would I need the HDK for something like that?

Mantra delayed load instancing works pretty well for simple animated crowd instancing. What if I wanted to implement something like sequence blend, in a Mantra procedura, to smoothly blend between different sets of delayed load geometryl? If I understand correctly, massive implements something like sequence blend using a dso. (I could be wrong, I've never used massive) What would the steps be to generate something like that in houdini?
I was looking at the mantra program procedural as a possible solution, but the documentation for that is really sparse. Could python be used as a program procedural? and I saw the default values for the program procedural run gconvert and send it to stdout. Is that how it works… the program procedural receives the geometry from stdout?

Technical Discussion » houdini 10 display problem

I just set up a new core i7 rig, max, xsi, and after effects works flawlessly.
But houdini 10.0.249.5 is unusable, all the icons have disappeared and it runs extremely slow, like an extreme graphics card problem. also every time the program opens, the ui cache needs to rebuild, though it didn't crash the previous time.
specs:
win64 sp2
asus p6t v2 deluxe
core i7 920
quadro 3700 fx, I tried drivers 182.08 (which houdini worked wonderfully with the same card in a mac pro running win64)
and 182.65, the newest driver, which has the exact same problem
display 1280 by 1028
thanks for any insight into this problem
edit:
interestingly, after trying different things for a while, trying different monitors, and installing firefox, setting up web browser proxies correctly, etc. now houdini works with no problem. I don't know what it was exactly, but might have had something to do with firefox being installed? It works just fine now though….
