Hello to all.

I just installed last production build 9.1.179 for 64bit windows and here's whats happening (I attached screen shot). Also every operation, click, whatever is super sluggish.

Sys specs are:

winXP pro, 64bit, service pack 1;
Core Quad q6600
geForce 7900 GT/GTO (latest drivers for xp64bit , 169.21)

Any ideas what can be wrong?

Thanks in advance

dj.

For the missing icons, the most likely problem is that your icon cache file has become corrupt. Try deleting $HOME/houdini9.1/config/Icons and restarting Houdini (which should cause the cache to be rebuilt).

As for the slowness, I had a similar problem. It turns out that a lotof the time was being spent accessing the help server to generate tooltip text. A fix for this was actually reported to Side Effects by another user:

this seems to be a known bug with mozilla and ipv6-lookup for localhost connections under vista.

changing the “network.dns.disableIPv6” preference in the all.js file in the mozilla/defaults/pref folder form “false” to “true” did the trick for me.

Depending on the cause of your slowness problem, this may or may not help, but please give it a try.

hmh, I deleted icon cache file, and it's the same. I reinstall houdini, and no good.
By default installation goes into Program Files folder, there is one more Program Files x86 folder for 32bit applications. I guess, since this is 64bit version of houdini, problem is not about that.

I am downloading 9.1.193 right now to see if anything will change. Maybe it is a problem with 64bit winXP?

still no progress
Is it possible that I have to install something that does not come with winXP installation? This is super fresh copy of xp (64bit) and maybe something essential is missing…

I'm using Vista 64 bit, and never had any problems. I'm using an nvidia 8800GTX with driver 163.75 (though I suspect the XP and Vista drivers are quite different). But there is nothing in the description of your system that sounds like it should be problematic. Upgrading to SP2 shouldn't hurt, but I also don't expect it will help.

It's possible that there is some problem with the application that converts the Houdini SVG icons into PNG files (this process happens automatically when starting Houdini). The error reporting from that procedure isn't very good so you might not be notified if there is a problem.

I've attached the SVG icon for the polyextrude SOP. Put this file in ctemp, and run “$HFS/hsvg/hsvg ctemp/polyextrude.svg” from the Houdini Command Line Tools. A bunch of .png files should appear in the current directory, and you shuld be able to view them with mplay. If you get any error messages or experience problems doing this, please let me know.

Another thing to check is that your TEMP directory is set properly. Try setting it to point to a directory with no spaces in it (like ctemp). You can set this value in the Command Line Tools shell by running:
set TEMP=ctemp
before running Houdini. Again, make sure to delete your $HOM/houdini9.1/config/icons directory before trying this.

I'm on WinXP Pro x64 as well, with 8800GT card, no GUI problems so far.

I can confirm that, with the wrong date the svgicons.cache wasn't created.
Thus the GUI had to rebuild it constantly ¬_¬.
Now it seems to work perfectly … (for the moment)
