@ fede: thanks for the suggestion, but I did a quick test with the glow material and it is more like a fake volumetric light thing, the solution I am after is geometry that emits light from itself, I have made a quick render in Modo with a “lumigon” torus, its just a standard material with a “luminous Intensity” and color…
@JColdrick: Yes I have the concept from Modo… I have used it a lot in Modo and I find that it is a very versatile creative light tool… I did know about the area light option in Houdini but find it rather limited compared to the “light emitting material” solution. I really hope to find a way to do this in houdini…

In Mantra, you can make any object “emit” light just by giving it a constant color and relying on diffuse reflection (indirect illumination) to take care of the illumination it provides. You need to either use irradiance (see the Global Illumination light shader) or Physically Based Rendering to see this result, though.
