Cloth vs. surfacemassdensity

Hi,

I'm trying to understand the relationship between the Surface Mass Density parameter in the cloth object and the behavior of the cloth. It doesn't really seem to affect… Or is it something that my simple “drop cloth on a collider” test scene can't show?

I also noticed in the DOP detail view that there are two spots where this property exists: A) inside ClothMassProperties; B) inside PhysicalParms.
The first one updates when we change the parameter on the cloth object, but the second one doesn't… Again, I'm confused about why and which one is actually controlling the behavior of the cloth? I'm using H 12.0.679.

Cheers

Hi,

The cloth object automatically scales the stiffness/damping and drag forces with the surface mass density. (you can disable this behavior by editing the Cloth Object asset if you want).
This prevents you from having to re-tweak all the stiffness/damping/drag settings whenever you change the surface mass density.
You won't notice the effect of the surface mass density parameter if you drop cloth on a static object. You will notice it when you have two pieces of cloth colliding.

The surface mass density is read from the ClothMassProperties data.

Thanks, Michiel, instead of editing the cloth object asset I just plugged a ClothMassProperty DOP after each object to tweak the values. Seems to be working fine…

Which node inside the cloth object I have to change to disable this behavior, of the massdensity affecting the drag/stiffness/damping ?

trying to get some strings falling faster from the tips and I can't get it to work properly.

Thanks
