Houdini Apprentice HD Mac OS X problems (many) Sept. 17, 2008, 6:27 p.m.

Hey Glendaloch,

I timed the Houdini startup with nothing but Activity Monitor running at 65 seconds.
Attached is the “Sample Process” text which came out while A. Monitor was saying application is refusing to respond (for the greater part of the 65 secs). Hope this is some use.

That's a strange set of samples. What is going on is that Houdini's licensing code is asking OS X for the name of the computer. The entire set of samples is Houdini waiting for the answer.

Is there something strange in your networking configuration? As a test, you could try unplugging the network cable and turning off your wireless and seeing if that makes a difference.

The key has got to be something related to your networking setup…

That is very strange…I'll do some Googling and see if anyone else has hit this…

Yes, that was it!

I unplugged the dsl cable and Houdini started up in 5 or 6 seconds.

Don't know what it could be in the network, there is just 4 macs on it, but some may have the same user name (?). Don't have any virus software and keep this main machine for only a few programs, all
3D stuff, not even Adobe programs are on it.

The telephone company has the internet connection heavily firewalled down the line, so maybe this has something to do with it.

The most notable thing that has happened in my experience of OSX Houdini is that it takes forever to start up, bouncing in the dock for about a minute. Though once after I started the Houdini Escape by accident, Houdini (Apprentice) Master started really fast, just like any other program. It did this for about 3 or 4 times and then reverted to the slow bouncing in the dock startup.

What type of machine do you have? Houdini should not take a minute to start up. Here's what you can do to help us fix it.

- run /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app
- in the search field, type in “houdini” to filter out other apps
- start up Houdini and get the icon bouncing
- click on Sample Process button in tool bar of Activity Monitor
- save the results
- send them to us

Maybe we'll be able to figure out why it's starting slowly for you.

Hi Mike,

I am using an 8 core Mac Pro, last January edition, it is the base model with 4GB ram. Also the video card is the base model, but am not having any issues with this. (Only doing dynamics at present, hard body, and maybe particles and fluids later.)

Will try using a tablet tomorrow if I can get the newer build installed successfully within a reasonable time frame.

…Not exactly sure what you are saying …

N.B. This doesn't sound right…understand the gist of what you say…slightly challenged layman here…
