I’m currently a student and aspiring FX artist, and this is a personal project I’ve been working on last year.
I am responsible for all aspects of the shot except for the modeling and texturing of the assets, I only did the hero asset (the generator).
The scene is a fan art inspired by Frostpunk, focusing on the generator as the central element, building up toward a large-scale failure/explosion.
As i will be looking for an internship soon i am currently reworking some aspects of the shot.
My main goal with this project was to explore layered FX work (smoke, explosion, rbd, debris, etc.) and try to create a believable sense of buildup and instability around the generator.
I would really appreciate any feedback, especially regarding:
Composition (readability, focal point, framing)
Lighting (mood, contrast, integration)
Texturing / shading
FX work (timing, scale, layering, realism)
Right now I'm mainly focusing on image composition and lighting. For the cliffs in the background I plan to do re projection on it and I am currently doing the matte painting as I feel like they don't look realistic enough. So this is the very last version of the composition, i also changed a bit the camera :
I know that for now the project mainly lacks compositing, and that I’m going to have a lot of work to do on it. Any advice on how to push this piece further would mean a lot to me. I’m still learning and trying to improve, so all critiques are very welcome.
Thanks a lot in advance for your time and sorry for my English, it’s not my native language.
