If anyone has any suggestion, I would greatly appreciate it.
I cannot/have not been able to get Houdini 11 to render
OS: 10.5.8
2.2 ghz intel core 2 duo
graphics card: GeForce 8600M GT
4 gb ram
I am running 11.0.528 and if I use MPlay or if I use a mantra node, I am not able to see a render.
Is this, could this be an updating the graphics driver issue?
If anyone has any other suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you.

Try turning on “Display All Images at 8bit Pixel Depth” in the Display Options (Windows>Display Options, Video Card Options button). Mantra sends fp16 image data by default.

Hi twod,
thanks for the suggestion!
I turned on“display all images @ 8 bit pixel depth” in display options/ MPlay
and I still get a black render window.
you mentioned in another post on the forum to bump up the brightness by a slight amount - where does one adjust that parameter?
any suggestions, i'd appreciate it.
thanks!

Hi Rob,
I was not able to render the simple scene. I rendered from the viewport menu.
Wow, this is frustrating. Do you think it is a graphics card issue?
It wouldn't be a shader issue, correct?
Any suggestions, i would greatly appreciate.
Thanks!

Try turning off Fragment shaders in the Video Card Options. If that fixes the issue, then it's a shader compile problem. OSX's implementation of GLSL differs a bit from ATI and Nvidia's (which are also a bit different from one another). You can try enabling the environment variable HOUDINI_OGL_DUMP_SHADER_ERRORS to see what's amiss, if a shader compile error is the issue.
I don't know why you'd be getting 2 MPlays for 1 render.

Hi , I have a mac book pro and the scene renders fine. Out of interest can you render the image to disk ? . So in the output path change it from ip to a path on your computer. ie mymac/myimage/myimage.jpeg .

Glen,
Thats excellent news !. Next I would like you to delete your entire user directory, remember your user directory has moved on mac from version 10. Then restart Houdini , that should revert all the settings to factory default. Then load up the simple scene I sent and try and render to mplay . that means no path to a folder , just use ip .

Hi Rob,
thank you for your help! - user directory is the Preferences - yes?
I renamed the H11 Prefs to H11_old in user/Libraries/Preferences/Houdini…
Opened simple scene and got 2 MPlay dialog boxes - all black, no image.
It is excellent that I can render to file, but M Play is not working out.
out of frustration I downloaded apprentice onto my wife's imac, 2.8 ghz, 10.5.8 and rendered the simple scene with M Play and flipbook. It was a beautiful thing.
I am going to look into updating the graphics driver on the laptop.
it goes without saying, any and all suggestions are welcome. And thank you for your help!
Glen
