Here's a render test that i did for a project that I was working on Houdini.

Here I could get some help for some problems that I had on this project.

It's not the final thing yet.

I hope you like it.

I used Houdini standard fur tools and Mantra to render.

Lots of character and great fur!

Great character and very convincing fur. Can you share some details on how you did it? Shadow maps on volumes or any fancy trickery?

Thanks for the feedback.

No, I just used the standard tools with a little modification to give more control over the grooming fur and a lot of experimentation.

I transformed the whole character on an asset so all the fur controls were procedurally controlled, so even with some mesh modifications it was just a matter of updating some groups to make it work, they also could change the rig setup the way they want and I could still keep my setup working. So I spent a most of the time working on the fur look without worry about rigging, animation and modeling.

It was just a matter of placing the asset on the shot and it was procedurally modified as required.

There was a lot the could be improved and will on the next projects but in general was a great and flexible workflow.

I'll place the the final shots soon as I have them.

Very nice! Well executed.

The character design is very good as well.

Thanks for the explaination.

what about the render time ?

edit : I just watched your demo. Nice feather tool ! Can you please explain a bit how it's done ?

thx

Thanks!

The render for the wolf were done in two parts, one for the skin and one for the fur itself, for the fur with the shadow maps in 1920X1080 on my laptop i7 6 Gig ram took around 15 min per frame.

For the feather tool I basically used points to distribute the feathers but for better distribution I used the csUniformScatter (http://www.sidefx.com/exchange/info.php?fileid=761) [sidefx.com] in conjunction with a otl that I've made to stick those points to the deforming mesh without it I had point changing as the mesh deforms, with this I had a nice distribution of the points to distribute the feathers and then I separated the process em several parts to have more control over the grooming feathers. So I cold have tools to control each separated part of the character, it's a WIP workflow witch I plan to improve for now I don't have a inter collision between the feathers I believe that's possible to create it without have to simulate anything that's my next challenge.
