Initially, you need basic vector calculus, but if you wanna dig in deeper and realize some techniques from magic Siggraph papers, learn the whole part of calculus.

Your question is a little general and answer to it is not clear and simple !!! :?

VFX industry is very big and every part of this field use different Mathematics!


for example “Geometry Mathematics” is one of the important and useful mathematics in the VFX But not in all :!:

All of the Mathematics like algebra , fuzzy logic (useful in AI and Crowd) , Ray Tracing equation (usually use in the Lighting & Rendering) , PhysX (usually use in the RBD & … ) , and others ,useful in the VFX :!:
