I can't speak directly about your tool since I haven't tried it, but regarding latest Zbrush box modeling tools, I speak from direct experience with it - it's a step backwards regarding box modeling. Everything takes 10x more time to do than in a traditional (max, modo, xsi, even houdini.) poly modeler. It's better to have box modeling in Zbrush than not to - it gives one more option to those artists that are using only Zbrush - but on an absolute scale, it's crap.

Yes. You are right. with ZModeler user need to do more actions acoording to classic modeling, especially more time to select tool\target. But my tools have a classic modeling style (more like xsi) except it have more powerfull selectors (like “Flat Island” in ZBrush). But of cource you can see this difference better when it comes with more polytools. I think it woluld be very fast and intuitive tools

Also we have full featured native selection (points, edges, faces). ZBrush selection is very limited in this case

Regarding poly-modeling tools they didn't bring anything new, XSI-ers have those tools since forever. Now, if they somehow integrated Mudbox's core in Maya not only brushes and whatnot and can handle the same poly-counts that Mudbox could (past tense yep, it's another “unofficial” abandonware), that's pretty rad I must say. For Maya users obviously.

man.. I think I was thinking the same thing when I saw some of those modeling features… XSI 5.0 (when I first started using it…) wonder when (and if) are they gonna get a proper GATOR and weightmaps (or that amazing non destructive history…)

a lot of the hotkeys are also reminiscent of those workflows (but its been a while… )

Great job! Looks like soon we will model in Houdini. Once you complete all the toolbox, give us the Orbolt link.
Thanks,

yeah symetrie is here ! ;-)
love the UI
wha'ts the bake tool ?
Alexey Vanzhula
> yeah symetrie is here !
yeah. it is post modifier with simple cut and mirror nodes

> love the UI
yeah. it is very clean, IMO.

> wha'ts the bake tool ?
it is not tool.
First 5 rows of controls in DM window is procedural selector.
You can simply select points, edges, faces in any “direction”.
So ‘Bake’ simply freazing procedural selection to flat items list.
Than we usually want to editing this items manually

PS At this stage my modeling system (DM) is very procedural, like Houdini software. I mean: less scripts, more nodes (inside DM HDA)

Are all the operations subject to assigning hotkeys? I dislike chasing commands on a toolbar with the mouse when modeling.

All commands can be assigned to hotkeys. Window (in real modeling) is just for monitoring selection and tool state. So you dont need to get mouse out from polygons
Alexey Vanzhula
Moreover in the viewport, for example in extrude tool state, you can change thickness with dragging LMB, or change inset with dragging MMB, divisions with Wheel and others. You need go to toolbar only for precise tool controling and of cource when you want some exotic selection.
Video coming soon…

PS This is simple experiments with mesh deforming

Is this a tool that you'll be selling on Orbolt or how does one gets to play with it?

Did you mean Direct Modeling? Yes, full set of modeling tools (and retopo also) will be included in DM HDA on Orbolt.

Let McNistor try your tool, I am sure he could give some great feedback.

You are right. I need some feedback but a bit later

Will gladly take it for a spin when you're ready.
