I think people from the named companies will know better than me but I think/thought that Mainframe and Rainmaker were using Houdini, and other small studios.

I talked to one of the reps 3 months ago - you need to have a demo reel (i.e., some 3D professional experience) to apply. I don't have one yet.
They had some good scholarships - covering as much as 10,000 of the 16,000 that the program costs. That's because VFS is celebrating 25 years. So if anyone has a reel (and 4 months spare time), feel free to jump on it.
