Hi !

I'm currently looking at different ways of exporting animation from Houdini to Unreal and I'm struggling to figure out the new motion clip workflow introduced in 20.5 as documented here : https://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini/unreal/animations.html [www.sidefx.com] and mentioned here: https://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini/news/20_5/engine.html [www.sidefx.com]

I've tried outputting characters animated in Apex/KineFX (using the KineFX to Unreal HDA) using Electra and the Capybara and I still can't see any Animation Sequence being outputted from Houdini Engine despite the motion clip being packed and even having it as a separate output.

Does this workflow only work with Animation Sequence inputs from Unreal (Unreal -> HEngine -> Unreal) or is it possible to output something entirely created in Houdini ?

Are there any simple example files that could help clarify the whole workflow ?

This has been tested in houdini 20.5.416 on Linux, manually compiled with houdini engine 2.2.3 and Unreal 5.4 + 5.5.

Thank you !

Hi,

Thanks for the question, the output needs to specify the Unreal Skeleton to use using the 'unreal_skeleton' attribute.

But we're also aware of some motion clips not exporting correctly, and an issue importing the Cabybara skeleton.

We're working on fixes these, and updating the docs too. We'll let you know when these fixes are available, sorry for the inconvenience.

Hello Andy,

Has there been any more progress in regards to this?

Thank you.

Unfortunately even with Unreal 5.6 this issue still persists - when moving a character from Houdini to Unreal Engine via Houdini ENgine, some skinning mismatch causes Unreal Engine to crash; I will investigate further but this feauture still does not work as expected.

If you haven't already logged one, a bug with a file attached could help the programmers working on this one. Thanks!
