Any one that is using bundles had any success in managing instanced lights?
My scenes are basically composed of:
props geometry (@geo_props)
prop lights (@lights_props)
characters (@geo_chars)
characters lights (@lights_chars)
For this specific environment, I have hundreds of street light that I'm using instancing. Unfortunately the instanced lights react more like objects than actual lights.
What I mean is, I don't want the characters lights to affect the props and vice versa. For that I use light mask with bundles, but the only way for the instanced lights to affect the props geometry is to not use any light mask at all. If I use * in the light mask field the instanced lights affect the geometry. If I try something like * ^@lights_chars, the instanced lights that are not even a part of any bundle already stop working.
If I try to create @lights_instanced and use it on a object light mask, I still don't get any result.
Kind of confusing, I know, but has anyone tried something like this? Instanced lights and light bundles?

After I started using a wifi USB dongle I have been having really long delays to start up Houdini, open a file and start a render. Even if it is just a cube in the scene.
I'm on CentOS and using a local hosted Apprentice license. If I remove the dongle, Houdini works fine.
Any suggestions besides the ones already posted above?

You have the wrong software names on your images
In max you can try to use particle flow to emit particles from geometry. Also on the position node, you should mark “Lock on emitter” check box, this way the particles will stick to their birth place.

Hum… just to keep this in english, here is the translation.
Hi Homero,
That thread is from an old experiment I was doing, still before the procedural city tutorials came out.
I'm a Houdini enthusiast but unfortunately I don't use it commercially. I should be giving it a try in production since I've been doing games for these last 3 years.
As for training, here in Brazil? I've never met a single Houdini user down here. I've herd of someone using it in São Paulo, but he wasn't even brazilian
Hi Andz
Are you developing something based on that famous procedural city tutorial?
This is my first test with Houdini and I'm still lost. Specially in the expressions and syntax, but I'm going thru a lot of tutorials to evolve.
I work with motion graphics and am looking into a way of doing more advanced animations. Do you know of any decent Houdini course here in Brazil?

Here's how I solved two problems installing Houdini Apprentice on ubuntu 6.10.
The problem with:
houdini.install: 765: let: not found
can be fixed by editing houdini.install. The very first line:
#!/bin/sh
should be changed to:
#!/bin/bash
It looks like ubuntu 6.10 has /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash which does not support the “let” builtin command. /bin/bash does support “let”.
The other problem can be fixed by editing sesinetd.install. The line:
gunzip -c $HERE/houdini.tar.gz | tar xf - “houdini/sbin/sesi*”
needs “–wildcards” added to the tar. It should look like this:
gunzip -c $HERE/houdini.tar.gz | tar xf - –wildcards “houdini/sbin/sesi*”
Those two changes should get houdini installed.
I continue to have trouble getting a license.
Thank you!
Xubuntu

Hi Elias, I think that you are “really” starting on CG, not just Houdini.
What they mean by compositing is this:
- On a image editing program like Photoshop, you can use layers of images. Imagine you take a photo of a friend, and you would like to put his head on a dogs body. In an image editing software you would first put a dog's picture in your canvas, then you could cutout your friends head from photograph and paste it on top of the dogs head. Just like you would to on real life with printed photographs and some glue . But lets say that you didnt like the dog picture you used, you would have to start all over again because you ruined both your pictures. In graphics software we could have pasted the head in a layer above your dog picture. That way we would not ruin the original, if we decide to change the dog that is on a layer undeneath the head we can, because they are 2 separated things. That is compositing, or a virtual colage.
- With houdini compositing tools you can do much more than paste together images, we could for example animate the layer that is above… like a video of a shrinking head on a dog And since is all “virtual” you can later on change something in the video if you wish.
- As for the glow, you could from your rendered image of the lightsaber put the glow on another layer on top of it. Why? Maybe later on if you decide that you want to change its color or intencity? Just change it in the above layer!
You will need a lot more reading for making good compositings of pictures, rendered images, effects, etc. Search for alpha channel, compositing, layers in google or in books at Amazon.com
I hope I've helped and not confused you even more :-)
Cheers

I think he is talking about a shader that simulates edge beveling.
There is a shader like that for 3dstudio called f-Edge . I have attached a picture to better explane it.
You can take a look at the html help that comes with it to understand how it works.

The more you let your software do stuff for you, the less control over it you have.
Im sure Carrara has some fillet or bevel tool, but just how much control do you have over it? In a software like Unigraphic's NX there are at least 15 types of conic transitions from one surface to another, that is without counting all the free form transitions like G2, G3, etc… but sure, I have to press at least 5 diferent buttons for it. And the soft costs about $ 60K…
So I guess the factor goes as:
more control = steep learning curve = high price

…Here in Brazil, after being sent back to Maya and its pain, I showed people what Houdini can do, using one license + one person (against 5 Maya/persons) Now we are discussing how to implement Houdini in the pipeline.
.
Hi Gerome, sorry to be off topic here. But I'm in Brazil too, and tried to contact you by PM but it is not working. I'd like to get in touch with more Houdini users around here.

Hi JohnnyBGoode thanks for the comments, Im glad you liked my paintings too, I just wish I had more time to paint.
I don't think there is a gallery at the moment, there used to be one on the old version of OdForce. But I've seen some student works being added to Houdini's demoreel, and I'm sure your animation is up to the standards of being there as well.
Keep up the good work!

Hi guys,
I've been studing Houdini for few months now and decided to updated my personal gallery with a Houdini section containing some experiments I've been doing with the help of friends from OdForce.
