This new Y570 however uses a 5400 rpm drive and other than the display resolution, it's really the only other negative. It would be nice to find the perfect solution but there are always trade-offs.
I use an earlier Y version with the previous 1.7 Quad and 7200 500GB hardrive and though I wish the resolution were higher, it runs Houdini fine for me.

…however is that kind of condescending tone really necessary?
I don't think it condescension, it's really just telling people with less experience, in a tactful, i.e. humorous way, that the concepts and pace of the training would be difficult to follow.

“lumakey node where I would have liked to pick the color to be a limit to key”
I thought you had that part and was only wanting to know how to pick the color via a color on the image itself. I am new at Houdini but I think you would need to add/modify the parameter interface on the lumakey node itself.
You would have to add a color parameter and then link the setting to the luminance some way. I'll look at it more when I get a chance but I would be surprised if it wasn't possible some way.
I know I was looking at the color replace node and wishing the only source color option wasn't just the “wheel” but rather a single color parameter, then you could just MMB the specific color on the image as the source. I'm sure it can be done by modifying the paramter interface, I'm just not experienced in the software yet.

“In the process, Mr Ron shared about Houdini's colour picker, always want to pick colours from image files like what i do in photoshop but imagined Houdini being able to do it. Just MMB on the colour parm and drag mouse over to the image to pick it's colours.”
Per, http://lghsh204.blogspot.com/2011/04/day-36-3rd-render-was-slightly.html [lghsh204.blogspot.com]
MMB = Middle mouse button.
This works.

I'm pretty sure of the following:
If you bought H11 within 90 days of H12 going gold, you would receive the H12 license option for free and available on your license account page.
If you do accept the license then you forfeit your H11 perpetual license and would then be on the license plan that expires every year, starting March 1, 2013.
If you bought H11 prior to 90 days, then you would have to pay $99 as there is no longer the $69 upgrade price.
Hope that helps.

Before I put in a bug report or chalk it up to my video card, anybody else have an issue with this node in the following aspects:
1. The wireframe, hidden line and hidden line ghost all look the same, like hidden line when rendered.
2. Flat shaded, flat shaded wire, smooth shaded and smooth shaded wire all look the same, like flat shaded wire when rendered.
Changing the OGL version doesn't change the results.

In H11 under the Mantra node, Main, there was a Render Target option to choose Mantra Current thru Mantra 9.0.
I don't see this option in H12, is it moved somewhere else or due to core changes, it no longer exists?

I am not a mac guy but I would assume that if you are running an application that uses GL, that having a GL on/off option to on would be needed.

Have you tried using GL 2.1 at least. I would think with that graphic card, you should be using the new GL 3.2. I have a HD 5730 and can run GL 3.2

Thanks.
I saw that… I guess I got used to putting pins on cloth attached to nothing but space versus another object. I know that's not a practical purpose but I'm still new with this software and I was doing that for small experiments and it was an efficient way versus having to create static objects and connecting to them, etc.
So, if anybody knows how to attach cloth simply to “space” versus an object, let me know.

The Cloth shelf is missing the cloth pin contraint, cloth spring contraint, etc. etc. I went to edit it to see if they just needed to be added but nothing.

I know, RFM. I thought I read about it being in the prefs for H12 but somehow I missed it when I was initially looking…I probably was just looking in the display options.
Anyway, it works perfect now, thank you.

Having some issues with Houdini 12 Apprentice on my crappy laptop. Probably because it has a Nividia 3100M and can't handle the truth.
I start up the program and create a sphere, it just shows the “single yellow” lines that go around the shaded object, for a lack of knowing what that is called. Except there is no shaded sphere. I go move the viewpoint around but as soon as I do anything else, the program crashes.
So, the possible solution is to turn off the Open GL 3.0 or have the ability to use a lesser version or software render or…whatever.
Can somebody please tell me how to do that?

You would have to purchase a license for each computer that you would use in a renderfarm.

As far as what a render farm is…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Render_farm [en.wikipedia.org]
There would be specifics to Houdini which you can view details in the FAQ and other documentation.

rmagee,
Can you please give some clarification by stating what scenario(s) below is/are valid:
A. A person purchases H11 HD license within 90 days before H12 comes out. They are automatically moved to the H12 HD license that is annual and the H11 HD license that was perpetual ceases.
B. A person purchases H11 HD license within 90 days before H12 comes out. Their H11 HD license remains perpetual. They also receive an H12 HD license that is annual and will expire on the anniversary date of purchase unless renewed.
C. A person purchases H11 HD license within 90 days before H12 comes out. Their H11 HD license remains perpetual. They have an option to move their H11 HD to the H12 HD annual license, the H11 HD license ceases to exist.
D. A person purchases H11 HD license within 90 days before H12 comes out. Their H11 HD license remains perpetual. They have an option to purchase a H12 HD annual license for an additional cost of $99.
It sounds like your comments are in line with scenario A or D. but I'm not certain of whether the “you” in your comment to BradASchreiber was in relation to him, ie. those that purchased prior to 90 days or to those that purchased within the 90 days….so I am not clear on what specifically will happen.
