I don't like this new policy. I was waiting on HD 12 before I bought a license…now I am either going to purchase a HD 11 license or never and just use the Apprentice.
I would prefer not to have any watermark but I would rather have the watermark then have to pay $99 a year in order to keep using a license. I tend to not upgrade my software every year but every few years due to economic reasons. I involve myself in CG for fun and learning, it's not my day job.
Please re-think this change. Thank you.

How are you able to use 3rd party renderer with Houdini Apprentice? I think you are on the wrong forum board with these questions.

Nope, my 3 year old mac mini just died…motherboard. Replacement would cost almost as much as a new mac mini. Will never buy one again. Get a SFF PC or you will end up with a expensive paperweight.

for the present I don't think this is a useful idea…
what might be a cool and useful idea is a shader builder on something like an iPad…
a menu for nodes, drag them around and link them, then a preview of your shader…on a grid, sphere etc…
That's just what I was thinking as I read this thread. I think it's more of a legitimate direction….“helper apps” where you concentrate on a narrow area that makes sense for a mobile application. Exportation being a must or at least a copy paste to email of work done.
The odds of such an app being made increasing if it could be used for various main applications. A Renderman compliant shader builder being the only one I can think of at this time that could be used for Houdini and other main applications.

The geometry looked messed up to me. Anyway, I converted it to FBX, imported into Apprentice and exported as a hipnc file and the geometry looks better to me now.

Hello. I downloaded a free model by a Cinema 4D user of an iPhone 4 which is in the obj file format. If I import it into Hexagon, the model is visible and can be worked with but if I import it into Apprentice 10.0.4735 it “loads” in but I don't see anything in the viewport. I exported the file from Hexagon into a new obj file and tried to load it in Houdini but same results. Any thoughts? Thanks.
I am not able to attach the file to this post since it's obj but here is the link to the file:

there should be three (3)
I see what I did wrong now, thanks to your comment.
The choices given….
Houdini Master (Non-Commercial)
Houdini Escape (Non-Commercial)
Renderer (Non-Commercial)
For whatever reason, I thought Renderer was the option to pick instead of Houdini Master, hence why it gave me the error. Thanks again.

I followed the instructions. In the Houdini License Administrator, under server information I have all green checks. The installed licenses shows just the Render-NonCommerical 11.0. I don't recall if it's supposed to show the server license.
Anyway, when I run Houdini, the “This software requires a license” box comes up.
Anybody else with this issue and/or a way to resolve?
Windows XP Pro, core2 laptop, basic laptop…version 10 ran with no problem. Thanks.

Some .obj files will import without issue and others will not. Is there a polygon limit for Apprentice? Any ideas would be helpful. Attached is the obj file which was created in Hexagon 2 and an image of the error. Thanks

ok, read it.
Considering that my future hardware purchases will be pc versus mac, I will just get the HD license for pc. I can just use the apprentice non-HD on the mac and save the file and load it up on the windows if I want the added benefits of HD. Thanks.
My question then turns to what happens when I get my upgraded pc. How do I transfer the license over? Can I just email or do I have to call in? Anyone with experience on that scenario? I can't imagine it not occuring.
(EDIT) Nevermind, refined my search and found the answer.

I have a mac mini with a core2 and a PC with an opteron 165….I have done tests between the two and the mac running OSX X is faster than the mac running windows which is faster than my opteron 165. Faster in rendering. The problem is I just use the mac mini for programming and will not be spending a large amount of money to get anything with reallly good power. However I will probably get a Phenom II quad within the year…so the question is what to do…what to do. Is is possible for one HD license to be used on a mac and a PC? In other words can I transfer the license from one maching to the other…or can I have it installed on both machines and only run one at any given time? Just asking because I want to figure out what license to get, if I assume it's locked to a specific computer. Thanks for any input.

This isn't clear to me and I coudn't find a clear explanation on this forum.
From the od forum faq:
Apprentice Note: Mantra's MultiProcessing is disabled in the Apprentice version of Houdini. MultiThreading will work in Apprentice, however.
So if I get a Intel 2.4Ghz Quad…will houdini render using all the cores or not using Apprentice/Apprentice HD?
edit: nevermind, I read a thread that answered the question and it stated that both cores are used during the render.

You could just download a free version of Realsoft3d 4.2 instead of truespace 7.6 and it would be a better interface.
The links are in German but you could go to babelfish to figure it out.
http://www.urob.de/public/Realsoft3DV42.zip [urob.de]
Then get the serial number emailed to you from here:
http://www.realsoft3d.de/digipro/mod_form_v3a.asp?NAVI=8983908371106191;0;0&FMODE=1 [realsoft3d.de]
Completely free and legit with no “watermark” on the interface nor a crappy interface like truespace 7.6. Actually this is in jest, not that it isn't real but I'm telling you, truespace 7.6 is so crappy that you woudn't be that much better off than if you used a 5+ year old Realsoft3D product.
As a side question, could somebody explain to me how Relasoft3D is still in business? Does anybody actually still buy their software? Perhaps it is being subsidized by the State, cause damn for $700 it has passed it's prime years ago.
