I'll put my two cents in and say it isn't that big of a deal to me where I would even think about going to Truespace 7.6 which is one big ass watermark of crap. You want to talk about interface issues? dr_bernie, please reconsider, I don't like to see people harmed and you downloading that piece of now free crap, would be harmful.
I would be half joking to state that the TS interface must do some damage to the mind considering that if you go to the caligari forum, all the dudes that spent hundreds of dollars to get screwed over royally with a release of their latest and greatest for free, are still happy, shiny people over there.

You could also look into this open source software, while not python, it is similar…I think it's 2D only…but it's pretty cool 2D, so it may or may not work for what you need:

Is there a python script available or would somebody like to make one that would allow reading of a cube xyz size and cube xyz location to place cubes in a scene? I wrote/modified an existing VB program that will essentially create random sized/location of cubes through an input range without intersecting themselves and haven't had the time to get an import type script/program for any 3D software package I have used. The program outputs two text files, one that has the XYZ size value of each cube and another that has the XYZ center location of each cube. I will provide the progam for free if anyone is interested in getting Houdini to import in the data somehow. I am new to houdini but it looks like the package should be able to do it. I originally wrote the program to be used with Caligari truespace in C++ but I wanted to make it so that it could be used by other 3d programs. Granted this could probably be done some other way within Houdini. I have used it for abstracts and basic city mockups. Of course the program will probably have to be modified to match up with the XYZ paradigm of houdini for it to work correctly.
Here is an image of the program and the output files:

I would agree with dr_bernie on his point and solution, if in fact the reason the previous poster gave is accurate in relation to the company. I think the reason though is probably due to the fact that HD is exactly the same as Apprentice except for a reduction of specific restrictions. A screen shot can be done of the interface without the watermark showing, therefore the non-comerical stamp on the interface is to protect against that for both versions. I am probably wrong but that's my 2 cents.

Thanks, I will do that and see if an earlier version is more stable. I created a clean disk image with service pack 3 and windows updates…so I ghost back to that every once in awhile. I may redo the “clean” image" again. I have a opteron 165 running at stock 1.8ghz and 2gig of ram and at nividia 7600gt card. I run vue6 and Cinema4d 8 with no problems at all…so I don't know what the deal is. I'll report back on how an earlier version of Houdini works.

Well, the program seems to start up more quickly due to making the firewall exception but man, if this program doesn't seem to lock up on everything including really simple stuff. Is there a stability issue with 9.5? Is there some way of getting an older apprentice version so that I can learn the workflow and what everything does, that is more stable?

I just have windows firewall on. I added the Houdini program to the exceptions list, see if that makes it better. I did try to go the Unbuto route…oh my…coudn't even install Houdini, didn't have priveleges to do so…coudn't figure it out, so I dropped that option.
Thanks for your response.

Hello.
I am a new user and coming from a Cinema4D background. I downloaded the Apprentice version to evaluate before plunking down for the HD. I am just a hobbyist.
I have an AMD Opteron 165 and 2GB ram, running windows XP and a nvidia 7600gt card. Issues I have, from a clean XP install mind you, are a lot of crashes and slowness in starting up and starting the mantra.
It seems like this program is communicating with itself as a “local network host” a lot, which is the cause of all the pauses. Is that the case? Is that just because it is a non-commerical version? Is it different with the HD version?
I really want to get into this program but it just seems very unstable. Is 2GB ram not enough, is it just a matter of not enough machine in relation to too much software and I need to upgrade in order for the program to be stable?
