Hi,

I've been a Fedora Core 5 user until I decided (my bad) to upgrade it to FC6 for some reasons …. and this went to a 4 long useless days… trying to get the system back up and running … and trying at last to reinstall with not much success… apparently FC5 wont run as good as it was before on my thinkpad ..

to make the story short… I'm now on Ubuntu 6.10.

system apprently works fine.. and my really first application I install right after the ATI drivers is Houdini …

it works… but no matter how I do exit the program (File>quit, close button, alt+q) it crashes Gnome session..

following is the debug trace by Gnome

That's a totally normal GNOME stack trace, so what I think is happening is that X is actually crashing.

I seem to remember having troubles with X crashing when I first installed the ATI drivers, but I think I upgraded and solved my problems. Make sure you're right up to date with the version available on ATI.com.

HI

yeah i was using the standard “repositories” drivers (which was old 8.28.8) and now manually installed the latest 8.34 drivers… but doesnt really fixed it.

after a system upgrade (prior to drivers install) the gnome wasnt crashing anymore … but what I had (and still have) as a problem.. is that if I quit the application Houdini cant popup the “save before exit” popup window.

I guess ther's a problem with X maybe?

any ubuntu users here that have same problem and luckly a workaround?

cheers

….now that i think more about it… couldnt be a “sound” problem?… i remember about reading about sound problems with Houdini and Linux before.. never had those actually.. but now can be there the problem.

ps.. damn me and when i decided to upgrade my Fedora… it was so great… and dont ask me -why- i wanted to upgrade…

You could check the forums on gentoo. It's a great repository of answers to all your linux problems even if you are not using gentoo.

ok I found the problem.. ehehe.. seems that I'm having the same exact problem I had with Fedora Core 5, I need to install the GCC3.2 version because the GCC3.4 is much more unstable… and seems on this ubuntu is the same.

GCC3.2 have no problem at all.

cheers
