Houdini on X11 is very painful. The viewport runs at 24 fps on my 9700XT. Are we going to get a wayland version of Houdini?
NicTanghe
im 99% sure there will be a wayland optimised version at the latests when rhel drops support for x11 wich might be right around the corner.

Rocky Linux 10 is out and they as well are full Wayland now.

Can we get at least some information from stuff or anything if H21 will be wayland compatible or?
H20.5 qt6 version does not work on wayland at all.
At he moment only way is either older versions of Rocky and similar that still had recent support for X11 or windwos.. which is soo bad that I would love to avoid it.

How's Wayland support for H21 please?

I think in another thread someone mentioned after contacting support, that wayland support will come for H21 but most likely wont be backported to H20. As someone who dont wanna miss on wayland for my daily usage/workflows, I went for a nested x11 session within wayland via xephyr (as mentioned in this thread, but with a slightly different config: Thread [www.sidefx.com] )

Works fine for me without any real performance regressions so far (except for placing nodes is a little bit laggy for some reason) and ofc no real multi monitor support, as it all happens within one window. just needed to add this to my bashscript in order to type symbols like "@":
setxkbmap -layout de -variant nodeadkeys
and unfortunately the clipboard is not shared between wayland and the nested x11 session.

Do we have any updates on this since the announcement?
Mirko Jankovic
Actually, it seems like the problem is only with Nobara Linux. I moved to CachyOS and had no issues at all. Qt6 Houdini and CachyOS Wayland Nvidia work perfectly fine. Fedora is fine as well, so it seems like only Nobara messed something up.
azaremskiy
Hmm, the last time I tested on Fedora about two months ago, it crashed exactly the same way it did on Nobara under Wayland.

I've been using qt6 on Arch Linux + Wayland + Nvidia for the past 2 weeks and it seems to work perfectly.

I am going to try again but I could not use it on Fedora 42, it is very unstable last time I used.

Let me know if someone had the same issues or not.

Yes we need a wayland support in houdini for linux it a pain to use x11 now. And in cant move all of my workflow on windows

Just curious, but why can't you move your entire workflow on Win?!

Well for me first of all windows is junk that I try no to touch with stinky pole....
Second I had render twice as fast on Linux so performance wise alone is worth it.

Linux is the best platform for 3D software. If a program has a Linux version, it always runs faster, without exceptions.
alexmajewski
There are multiple angles to this question. Performance, ecosystem, price & scalability, bloatware, privacy, customizability. Once you experience the good side of Linux, leaving it rarely crosses your mind.
coccarolla
I know, of course. I was mostly curious if there were apps available on linux that weren't on Win and which ones were those. There are many apps available only on Win however.
alexmajewski
@coccarolla It's unlikely there are apps crucial to our industry that are Linux exclusives.

Dudes!
I tested the latest build on Wayland on Fedora and I noticed that Sidefx did a lot of udates/fixes on viewport and it seems that it is working pretty well so far, write here if someone else is using H on Linux/Wayland and how it is the experience.
Mirko Jankovic
cachyos and fedora 42, works fine on Wayland, houdini qt6
nobara 42 is still crashing

I'm running Pop!_OS and so far so good, I'm eager for the support to wayland to arrive as well but I rather be stuck with x11 than going back to Windows.

I am thinking of using Pop!_OS in the future.
Right now I am on Windows and MacOS.

What is your experience so far with simulations, Viewport, rendering,... in therms of stability, speed, hardware support,. etc.?
mzigaib
In general I would say to never use Windows for VFX because it is bad in all aspects as far as I am aware that being said the ponctual issue is wayland and Houdini, 20.5 was working normally in the latest build but with 21 I am having panels disapearing and mouse wheel issues in this first version so I am back to X11, anyone else? I am Using Fedora by the way.
Mirko Jankovic
Same about mouse wheel, not working for me as well also on fedora 42. also I experience property panel just going empty sometimes. and nto for all nodes completely random.
Another thing I did notice is view port glitches with region render, had those a while ago back in 20.5 but were fixed. they hit again but only from time to time.
Anyway it is much better then it was that is for sure and I guess we can expect only improved wayland support.
