Quick gdb hint: one easy way to get around needing to type -foreground is to do
set fork-follow-mode child
in gdb before starting Houdini.
However, that doesn't explain why you can't run houdini -foreground from gdb now. One thing I do notice is that you say -fullfile in your H9 example, and not -foreground; can you check your syntax?

Yes, Apprentice HD users get 9.1 licenses. To upgrade, you have to go to File > Install Licenses in the Houdini License Administrator, then log in with your email and the password you were emailed when you bought Apprentice HD.

No, we won't leave you out in the lurch like that. Just email support@sidefx.com to get your other licenses given to you manually.

Do you have the fancy window effects turned on? Those need to be turned off for Houdini to run.

First of all, this is all predicated on you wanting to switch which computer you have Houdini installed on (or if you want to reformat/reinstall your operating system). If you don't need to do that, returning licenses doesn't matter to you.
To switch which computer you have your licenses installed on, you have to “return” them to the Side Effects Software license server. (You can only do this a limited number of times, usually 3.) When you return them, you create what's called an “entitlement” on our license server. When you use the Houdini License Administrator to install licenses from the license server, you are “redeeming” entitlements.
So, to switch which computer your licenses are installed on, you first use the Houdini License Administrator to return your licenses (by right-clicking on the license, selecting Return License, and logging in using your username and password), then do whatever changes you need to do (for example, reformatting your computer, or setting up your new computer). Then, after you install Houdini again, you can redeem those licenses using File > Install Licenses in the Houdini License Administrator.
Before 9.1.140, it wasn't possible to do this with all the licenses you get when you buy Houdini Apprentice HD. With a build >= 9.1.140, it is.
I hope this clears things up!

Actually, this is talking about the ability to right-click on licenses in the Houdini License Administrator and return them (e.g., when you're switching computers or reinstalling your operating system). Prior to 9.1.140, this wasn't possible with the Master-NonCommercial and Render-NonCommercial licenses that are required to run Houdini Apprentice HD.

Are you running a 32-bit Houdini on a 64-bit Windows install?
What the license diagnostic is telling me is that the license server (sesinetd) isn't running. Can you reboot to see if it's simply a matter of restarting it? (Alternately, if you know what this means and feel comfortable with it, you can explicitly restart the sesinetd service.)

Hi Jean-Renaud,
You have to specifically log in to the Houdini License Server by using your email address and password (the password sent to you when you first bought Houdini Apprentice HD). You can do this via File > Install Licenses in the Houdini License Administrator application.
Hope this helps!

It's not possible, unfortunately. Xlib is compiled using (or not using) XCB unconditionally.

Long-time users of Houdini will notice that we've turned off threaded UI by default in the 9.1 release. The reason this is required is because X, the graphical system on Linux, has a bug in the latest releases that causes hangs when you're using threads with X.
Non-technical/non-Linux people, feel free to skip this paragraph: For those who want to know, it's libX11's 1.1 release, which builds libX11 on top of XCB, the new low-level X library and protocol. There seems to be several deadlocks involved in waiting for responses from the X server. Downgrading to a version of libX11 not built on XCB, for example libX11 1.0.3, fixes this hang. I don't know how likely it is that you will be able to downgrade, though. If you can, everything should work normally - libX11 is backwards/forwards compatible.
There is a bug reported [bugs.freedesktop.org] with the relevant people. If you have a support contract with SUSE/Novell or Ubuntu, and you want this fixed, now's the time.

rdgWell, that and the fact that programming/scripting in hscript is insane/painful when you try to do anything even remotely complicated, and in Python it's easy.
What's the benefit in scripting with Python in H9?
The benefit is that hscript - the *previous* scripting language - is deprecated and will not be extended to match new functions (?).

Yes, but you may have a few problems licensing (which are easy to work around and support@sidefx.com will help you with them). 9.1 has fixed these licensing problems with XP 64.

You definitely don't need to set environment variables.
However, if you've got some set for some other reason, it might cause problems. Do you have any set?

You do need a new license (as well as a new license server). However, this license will be given to you for free. More details will be forthcoming when Houdini 9.1 is released, but you can read this thread [sidefx.com] for beta-specific details.

Do you see a directory called “houdini9.0” in your My Documents folder (I think)? First step would be to delete that directory and relaunch Houdini. If that doesn't fix things, we'll need to do some more debugging.

The beta version of 9.1 should not have licensing problems on Windows 64 any more. Be sure you install the licensing tools when you install Houdini 9.1, though – I believe it's not selected by default.

I would be entirely unsurprised if gcc 4.1 could outperform gcc 3.4 by that much. It's a vastly different compiler internally, and it does a bunch of SSE/MMX stuff automatically too.
However, as Moose mentions, you're not exactly comparing apples to apples here.

Those zlib messages are only warnings, not errors; Houdini should come up and work properly anyways.
