The “Volume Quality” setting is no longer in the Mantra > Rendering > Sampling interface by default, and isn't listed in the render properties in “Edit Parameter Interface”.
If I add it as a float (vm_volumequality) it doesn't appear to do anything when I change the value.
Is that parameter still doing anything? It's still in the documentation for 16.5

Thanks,
~Mike D.

Technical Discussion » nested string expression syntax

Thanks for the suggestion!
I was getting stuck on the nested functions, and thinking I needed to evaluate each one separately for some odd reason.

After fumbling around a bit I stumbled on this solution:
`chs(strcat(opinputpath(“.”,0),“/del_face”))`
It evaluates just fine in as a string expression.

I'm trying to get two parts of this expression to evaluate, with no luck.
chs(“`opinputpath(”.“,0)`/del_face”)
The opinputpath evaluates correctly, but when I try to evaluate this by adding backticks around it:
`chs(“`opinputpath(”.“,0)`/del_face”)`
..it goes wonky. I've checked the docs on quoting and embedding expressions, but there didn't seem to be anything on nested evaluations.

Hey Cybermax,
Will this work with Visual C++ 2010 Express?
I'm just wondering which version I need to install.
Thanks!

After another search of the forums I found the answer:

I've attached a file for future reference.

Thanks Raavenish,
I'm not quite sure I understand what's going on in the file. You've made 3 point groups, then the delete sop references a group that doesn't exist (group_0). The fuse sop then fuses everything that's remaining together.
I'm really looking for a way to fuse/snap each one of those separate groups of points together, so that each group ends up in the averaged position of the points in each group. I can do that by hand one by one, but need a more procedural approach.
Thanks!

Technical Discussion » Getting UV coordinates on surface from world space position

Is there a way to specify a world space coordinate, and return the UV coordinate on a surface at that point? Maya has a pointOnMeshInfo node that would return this info. I'm just not sure where to look in Houdini.
Thanks!

I just discovered a problem with using the Timewarp SOP. You lose a frame on every cycle (when post-extend is set to cycle). Bug submitted.

Since foreach doesn't work with pointgroups, how would one go about fusing mutiple groups of points separately?

Thanks Antoine!
I'll give that a try. I got a python script working that does basically (I think) the same thing, but it'd be nice to see if I could get it a little more streamlined.

Is there an easy way to check to see if a primitive group contains all the primitives from another primitive group? I'm writing a python script to do this, but it seems a lot more complex than it should be (listing all the primitives, and searching all the primitive groups to see if the prims are contained in more than one group)
These “parent” groups get created when importing obj's from Maya that have a grouped hierarchy of objects. I'm looking for a way to automatically delete all of the “parent” primitive groups.

Technical Discussion » hou.Track syntax?

I'm trying to access track data from a Dynamics CHOP node using HOM, but I can't figure out the correct syntax.
My node “/obj/anim_data_export/chopnet1/dynamics1” has a track named “game_geo1:tx”.
print hou.node(“obj/anim_data_export/chopnet1/dynamics1”).tracks() will spit out a list of all the tracks, but how would I go about accessing a tracks data using it's name?
Thanks!

If you wanted to use the height of the particle instead of it's age, you could group the particle based off of it's position. Use the Group SOP with a rule like $TY>= 5.
