The error message it gives you says it all; “No viscosity solve because all fluid was extrapolated into the collision field”.
In other words, reduce Surface Extrapolation under Volume Motion -> Collisions on the FLIP solver. OR, reduce the Particle Separation, which in turn will give you smaller voxels and then the Surface Extrapolation won't have the same radius at the same value.

Korny Klown2I'll see if I find the time to do it later.
I'd be very interessted as well, so if you like to “tweak stuff until noise/time-ratio is acceptable” again I appreciate if you save and upload these settings.
Korny Klown2Mantra is created by SideFX, so is Houdini. Mental Ray however is created by another company, why would you expect that to be included in Houdini? That makes as much sense as if Maya would come with Mantra.
By the way, why isn't Mental Ray available in the apprentice version? To make Mantra available for free and Mental Ray not somehow creates the feeling that Mental Ray is something special which you only get when you buy Houdini, whereas Mantra is just some ordinary renderer.

GyroscopeAh I didn't save, just did some quick testing. But between 7-9 pixel simples, and 2-32 ray samples with 0.016 noise level. It's all about tweaking really, getting the “right” noise level can be great. If you set it too low it will probably use your max ray samples everywhere, but if you find the sweetspot it will be more adaptive. Atleast thats how I understand it, I'm not really a renderguy I just tweak stuff until noise/time-ratio is acceptable to me :pSkybar
Hehe fun, I tried as well, 5 diffuse bounces and some heavy DoF.
1m30s for straight PBR. 25s with GI.
Any chance for the scene? I'm being contradictory in my last posts towards KK2 as I too want to learn how to optimize Mantra. Sorry mate.
Edit: And it'd be nice to post system specs when posting times.
I'm on a six-core i7, so might be a bit faster than your quad.

This makes me smile! I haven't used WYSIWYG much myself, but working quite a bit as a lampie before I've been around it a lot. Now changing careers into 3D and Houdini this is impressive to see, I never thought anyone would use Houdini for this. I would love to see something you've rendered if you want to share

Could be something else, I don't really know. When applying my LUT it doesn't look like how it's supposed to look anyway. It did before, but as I said it stopped working suddenly.

The setting “Apply Brightness/Contrast before LUT” under Display Options -> Correction suddenly stopped working in Render View. It works fine in Mplay. Deleting the prefs folder worked once before when this happened a few days ago, but it doesn't now.

I usually use either 0.1 or 10. There is some value where the geo tend to explode, around 1-2 something I think.

Hmm I seem to have the same problem as well. No idea what is causing it. Everything except Dissipation under the Shape tab is turned off.

If you are just going to re-time, why not use Time Blend SOP and Time Shift SOP? Sure, your volume is changing size - but if you get its maximum size, create a new volume that big, and copy your data into that new field(s); the Time Blend/Time Shift should work just fine.

I had this same problem before, but I didn't have much time to investigate and only lost about 10 frames so I worked around it. I used the option to only keep the last 5 .sim files, so that I had a backup incase anything happened, but still don't fill up the disk. It worked fine to restart Houdini and continuing the simulation from them at the start, but eventually it stopped working even though they had the correct size on disk (which I assumed meant they did contain the correct data). No idea why.
I haven't needed .sim files since, so I haven't had the chance to investigate further as well.
