Houdini ships with ready-to-use heightfield recipes. You can load them directly from the tab menu’s Terrain section. Recipes are more examples that illustrate how different nodes work together in a more complex setup. Recipes tell you how to creatively use colors, prepare masks, and combine different terrain-specific nodes.
Note
The recipes are only available for Copernicus-based heightfields and don’t have a SOP-based counterpart.
Learing Library ¶
The Houdini Learning Library provides a HIP file with nine Copernicus terrain examples.
Terrain Cobblestone ¶
The Terrain Cobblestone recipe creates a 1 x 1 surface with pebbles from modified
Cell Pattern COP. One side effect of this setup is to show how to use Copernicus heightfields in small-scale environments. A
Fractal Sample COP takes the raw cobblestone pattern and randomly samples it. This way you can fill the gaps between the pebbles with stones of varying size.
A sophisticated network with multiple Blend COP nodes adds different colors to the individual stones.
Terrain Sandy Rocks ¶
The Terrain Sandy Rocks recipe creates a terrain with sandstone terraces eroded by wind. The network combines two
HeightField Strata COPs rotated by almost 90 degrees.
A separate network branch with noise, distortion, blending, and masks creates a vivid terrain with the typical colors of a desert.
