Thread and nail image

I could use some help, recently I did the SIMPLE ROPE TOOL tutorial by SIMON VERSTRAETE on SideFX. In a gist it uses some tubes, shrinkwrap, intersectionanalysis and sweep to calculate a rope/thread around the tubes which you can position using a grid.

I really liked the concept and wanted to try making a thread and nail image with it. Something like this:
Text or image based, I think text is easier.

No need for complex or realistic shading for now.

I have made a grid with nails. But as I'm quite new with Houdini and still learning I am struggling to let Houdini calculate this process instead of me manually connecting each thread between points.

My question, is this tutorial the right basis for this idea or should I better go a different way all together?

I've not seen that tutorial but looks interesting...
You might also want to approach this from a more programitc angle using Vex.
Maybe have a watch of this https://entagma.com/creating-geometry-with-vex/ [entagma.com]
And see if you can translate some of the concepts to what you want to do. Essentially it's just points and then connecting them up.
The interaction between the threads so they dont go through each other could be tricky but depending on how you view it you may not notice.
Probably have a crack at both options see what works what doesnt is the best advice

Not really, rather filter out the curves after the 'connect adjacent pieces'-node:

Oh nice that already looks super close!
Also thanks for providing the file so I can study it while playing with different settings. Will try get some random depth to the strings

Here is a way for threads connecting numberous nails until trapped or reaching limits:
Store all feasible/straight connections for each point.
Randomly walk along them until all points are depleted.

Probably a bit late for the original poster, but as someone pretty new to Houdini this intrigued me and seemed like a good project to have a play about with in VEX and a procedural setup.
Attached is my take on a setup for this.
As always I'm sure there's a simpler solution and would be very interested if anyone can give me any pointers to improve the code side of things
Thanks

Made a super quick animation with it... one of the things I love most about Houdini and procdural setups is that you then almost get animation for free! https://www.instagram.com/p/CPye0qdjXyN/ [www.instagram.com]

True! In many cases it's just putting $FF in a parameter field and enjoying the show : )
