I'm running Apprentice with a marginal setup. My video display really isn't up to the job, however, I'm getting pretty far with the basics of Houdini.
When I add a light to my scene, everything slows to a crawl. I suspect this is an openGL issue.
Is there anyway to disable illumination in the viewport? Rendering is one issue, but setting the lights position and angle is another.
Thanks.

try the third icon from the top right of your viewport… that disable scene lights in openGL and uses a camera headlight only.
also in viewport settings you might want to uncheck few things in “misc' tab like ”Display textures“, ”multi texturing", projected textures and transparency.
cheers
