Overshooting motion blur

I'm trying to render some birds and can't really get a satisfying result with my deformation motion blur. The thing is that the have wings flapping at a high velocity and are flying at considerably lower velocity.
When I tweak the settings so that the wings look blurred the body of the bird is hardly blurred at all. And when I tweak the body to be blurred enough the motion blur of the wings get way longer than the wings them self are.

I've tried all parameters and settings I've found without finding a successful combination. (Trail Increment, Cache Size and Velocity Scale on my Trail SOP. And all the all the settings I could find on my Mantra ROP).

I might just have found the problem. I needed to make sure the v was transfered from my particles to my copied geometry. Shame I didn't think of that sooner.
