Hello all. Im coming up with this same problem.
Cant find a way to promote point groups to a set of edges.
Edges dont seem to be inherent with SOPs which offer either point or primitive groups to act upon. Im trying to procedurally bevel-sop edges and want the group name to be a dynamic group of edges - currently I can only hardwire the group name to a series of edges hand typed : eg p123-234
Bevel sop doesnt like point groups either.

well I had the shame problem, I wanted to bevel procedurally the top and bottom of the tube, apparently there is no way to group edges but you can group the primitive which has the edges you want to bevel and push this group to bevel-sop. In my case the the top and the bottom of a tube is always 0 1 no matter how many columns or rows the tube has and the bevel-sop will has effect only on those two primitives' edges.
I hope that helps.

Here is a link that has a file that shows you how to procedurally bevel edges that has worked for me.
