If I do this Houdini complains that it sees the group as an undefined variable. Any suggestions?

I would like to create a SOP that filters points by their color. Can anyone give me a hint as to how I can achieve this with VEX?

I can create a group node based on a current geometry selection. Doing so creates a group node instance with a pattern initialized to the selection.
I would like to use the same mechanism for my custom SOP. That is, I would like to intialize the SOP with the current selection pattern.
I have no idea where the group nodes pull this initialization data from. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks.

From the parameter input side, this is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.
I have been trying to figure out how I can generate multiple file SOP's based on the number of inputs in the input list. If anyone has ideas on how I can achieve this, I would love to hear them.

I want to create a new geometry operator. The operator will load a set of point clouds from specified files, then decorate them with a few new attributes. At present I can achieve this with a file node connected to two attribute create nodes.
I would like for the new operator to take in a list of paths as a parameter (paths to the point cloud files). The number of paths depends on the number of available point clouds. This arbitrary length input parameter is what I am struggling with.
Is it possible to create a parameter list of filepaths that I can append an arbitrary number of files to?

I have a custom operator (myOperator). I have implemented the operator functionality in python. Part of this implementation parses a json file (very inefficient to do on every cook). The output of this parse is a vector of vectors.
I would prefer to break out the parsing into a separate operator so that I can parse once (or on user request), rather than on every cook.
First question:
- is a new operator the best place to create this cache?
- if so, how (in python) do I send a vector of vectors to the output?

Agreed. This is a standard feature in most serious applications these days. I've been burnt by its absence.
Technical Discussion » How do I write the value of a parameter, together with point positions, to file?

I would like to write data on my geometry network to a file. Specifically, I would like to record:
- the value of a float parameter on a null node in my network
- the xyz position of points at a particular node (a merge node in this case)
I am able to do the latter by creating a CHOP network, adding a geometry operator, and saving the data channels. What I am not yet able to do is include the value of the float parameter I mentioned.
Can anyone offer guidance on how I might achieve this?

I have a VEX SOP that has a float parameter. I have dropped multiple instances of the SOP into a geometry node. Right now in order to adjust the parameters on the sops, I have to manually change each SOP. I would prefer to adjust the value from a single place, and have the value applied to each SOP.
Is there a way I can do this within a geometry object? I can't see any parameter node, nor do I see a way of connecting an input.
Thanks!

@circusmonkey - thanks for he tip, but I can't find the attribute bind vop you are referring to. Would this exist inside my VEX SOP network?

I solved this problem using Sean's delete node proposal, although I am sure there is a more elegant way. I will look through the samples submitted above. Thanks for the help!

I have added a custom attribute to the points in a point cloud. I am creating a VEX SOP network to process the points in this particular cloud. From inside the VEX SOP, I would like to read the custom attributes I added earlier (external to the VEX SOP).
Is this possible?

I have a selection of points from a cloud, represented in a group node. I would like to filter the output of the selection according to a custom attribute I added earlier.
I thought I could achieve this by feeding the output of the selection group node into another group instance, and filter using an expression ($MYVAR==X kind of thing). The filter works, but instead of receiving only selected points from the previous group, the filtering node receives the full cloud.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong here?

caveat: I am new to Houdini
I have created a vex sop. I have created a 3 element input parameter on my sop. The input parameter is configurable on the UI panel, as you would expect.
I would like to have multiple instances of this SOP in my geometry network, and control them all with a single parameter. How do I configure my SOP so that it takes an input connection and associates the connection with my parameter?

BTW a simple merge satisfies the selection criteria, but I lose information on the source cloud for individual points.

I have imported two point clouds as geometry SOPs. I would like to construct a system in Houdini that allows me to make a selection of the combined point cloud as if it were a single cloud. I would then like to apply transforms to the selections, using information specific to the individual clouds.
So my goal is:
- user only needs to make a single selection in the overlapping cloud region
- the post-processing of the selection needs knowledge of which geometry the individual points came from
Is this possible in Houdini? Can anyone offer me guidance for how I might achieve this?
Thanks!
