Yes, that sounds like the right way to me. We don't currently have any other tools that can do that aligning automatically.

Hi GalinaB! While I don't have a full answer to your question, I just wanted to clarify that Labs no longer supports the Mapbox SOP plugin. However, Labs OSM Import SOP is working just fine on the few tests I've tried.

You can drop down a For-Each Connected Piece after the tree setup, and for Primitive Include Group on the Connectivity SOP, select leaf. This will allow you to process each leaf one at a time in the loop.

But what are you trying to accomplish? Maybe there's a better way. Do you just want the leaves deleted that intersect a sphere?
