I've been asking myself the same thing…

How to make the flames appear in another fashion.

“Simple” things like controlling the height, color, etc. of the flames.

No old pro that can hint at something?

I recognize that error too, I used to get it.
I had to muck around with versions, trying different ones until I got one that worked for me.
I don't know what the actual problem was though, and I think you're running the same version that works for me..
