hi guys

am in tutorial land at the moment, one thing i notice from some of the tutorials is that the interface skin is black, which looks much easier to work with, however

i am strangly unable to find the relevent option in preferences, feel like i am going blind…

anyone care to share where i change this (to be honest i am dumbfounded that i cant find the option) as grey is doing my head in

It's in Edit > Color Settings, Color Scheme. The black scheme is “Dark”. You can download more schemes than the three provided as well.

thanks mate found it, also to turn the viewport background black is in the display options->background (change from light to dark) on viewport toolbar (small eye icon) if anyone else was wondering
