O.K., I am running the apprentice version, I have set up a Geometry OP, and put a File SOP in, and pointed the param to the file, but I get…

Error Unable to read file (C\foo\bar.obj)

…when I look at the comments (MMB on the file node). No geometries are loaded. Same thing when I point to a .dxf version of the object.

Also, like another poster, I get nothing but blank screen when I try to open the hoodnik tutorial files from 3DWorld. Yes, I have the build desktop chosen. I can build something from scratch, and I can open up alot of other sample files.

I am running under WinXP (Yes, I too would rather run it under Linux -)).

I can send a sample file to see if they work for someone else. Thanks in advance!!

Hi,

Houdini uses forward slash ( / ) & not backward slash ( \ ) so it should be

Cfoo/bar.obj

With regards to the Hoodnik tutorial, can you please copy the tutorial folder to your harddisk? Then try running the tutorial from the harddisk.

If the above fails, please download the tutorial files from 3DWorld's site [3dworldmag.com] & try running those.

Please let us know how it goes.

Cheers!

Hi Steven,

Sorry for the mis-typing in my message, but it was late. Yes, the /file param has C/foo/bar.obj. Still no go.

Also, I downloaded the tutorial from the 3DWorld site, and unloaded the file with WinZip. I will try again.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Houdini supports only polygons for the .obj format.

Please read the Formats.fmk.pdf file for more information.

Cheers!

This is a very simplified version of the obj file

v 14.588875 27.886073 -18.344969
v 12.343311 28.757428 -21.250183
v 11.302079 23.464209 -16.982019
g X1_X2_FACES
f 1 2 3
f 4 5 6
f 4 6 7

I have tried a .dxf version of the same. I can't see any problems with this.

I'm having the same problem. I tried exporting a model from another app to use in Houdini and cannot load it. I tried removing UVs, materials, smoothing, etc. nothing works. Even the following OBJ file won't load and all it is is a cube. Using Houdini Apprentice 5.5.151 on Win 2K SP 3.

The file SOP says, “No Geometry available” and “Error: unable to read file….”

Here's what the cube obj looks like:

I was having this problem earlier and it was because there was a space present in the path to the file. Also, try placing the obj file in your root directory, outside of any folders.

LOL! ops:

I knew that, honestly! I'm such an idiot. It worked fine on my linux system, but I had a space in my path on Win 2K. That was exactly the problem.

Thanks a ton

Hi,

Can you please define “I still can't see anything…”? I opened the Hoodnik_backstage.hip file & everything loaded fine for me.

If you didn't install the desktops provided ( there are instrucstions in the “README_BEFORE_START!!!” folder ), then Houdini will start up blank.

I understand you have selected the Build desk but try switching to other desks as well after the file is loaded.

Please let me know how it goes.

Cheers!
