This generaply happens if you are having video card problems or launched hou via a vpn session. Did you get the “software mode” pop up?

Yes, houdini is running in software mode.

What I would do is:

- get the latest drivers for your video card, and restart houdini
- if that does not work, post your configuration info (i.e. what video card, what OS? etc.) Several people in this board I know should be able to help with these kinds of issues

have you considered putting a bug for sidefx? Their software mode has gotten significantly better in Houdini 12 (compared to 11) so perhaps this is on their radar (take it from someone who works off VPN often)

explain your repro steps, as well as specify that you are running Houdini in software mode (and maybe explain that you do not have a graphics card but are perhaps using an integrated graphics adapter)
