This error has been plaguing me for some time now.
It previously happened on 19.5.403. I fixed it by upgrading to 19.5.640, and now it has returned to haunt me once again.
I'm at a loss. I've completely reinstalled Houdini, updated my graphics driver, anything I could think of to try and fix this, but to no avail.
Here's the crashlog:

Does anyone have any clue as to how to fix this issue once and for all?
Thanks.

I don't think my CPU is overclocked... Atleast not that I know of.

I figured it out. For some reason, my remote control program (Parsec) started causing Houdini to crash on startup. Funnily enough, starting it up, quickly disconnecting and waiting a minute before reconnecting allows Houdini to operate normally.

Saved my day you legend, can also confirm Parsec Virtual Display adapter seemed to be causing the same issue.
Thanks!

Hi,

Sorry to bump this topic back but i can confirm that this issue arise with Virtual Display Drivers, we also use a Virtual Display Driver with Reemo (similar to Parsec). And because this topic is a top result for this issue:

There is a better way than disconnecting during Houdini startup. You can disable the opencl fallback mechanism with HOUDINI_USE_HFS_OCL = 0
