Render view doesn't match output to disk using COP textures

I'm sure I'm doing something very basic wrong but whenever I use textures from Copernicus the output I get when writing to disk doesn't match the render view, it looks washed out.

In this screengrab the left side is using a Karma material and the basecolor is driven by a karma ramp constant and it looks the same in the render view and on disk, the right side is using a ramp in COPs and matches the Karma ramp in the render view but on disk is washed out (lower half of the image).

I'm just using a vanilla Karma LOP / USDRender ROP LOP.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I figured out that setting the signature of my Mtlx Image VOP to Vector 3 instead of Color makes the output match the renderview but I don't understand why at all...
