i've isntalled popt and now it gives a new err msg libpango.so.0. after googling on it i tried chking the depedencies and here's what i got after using the command - `ldd houdini-bin`. it shows that python not found but python is installed in the folder /opt/hfs9.5.350/python.

am using fedora core 10. not 5.I`m not sure.. But Fedora-Core 10 is a not good idea… In Fedora-cores the *Last release version* is not mean *The most Good version*..
If you want to use Fedore-Core and get some stability, you need version 8.. Versions higher then 8 - extremely unstable.. and i`m afraid - not usable..
You need to download FC8-x64 DVD, then use command “yum update” - and then, after tons updates, you can use this..
how is opensuse? particularly houdini on opensuse.openSUSE is great.. After long time using FC i feel myself highly comfortable. I recommend you download openSUSE 10.3 DVD, if you want to try.. Houdini work on Linux really faster and cleanly, than on Windows. I`m not frequently using it (i`m apprentice user - just very want to learn and try various insane tasks, interesting for me ), but for me is true - houdini is better on linux.

I`m solve python problems by setting right environment variables..
setenv PYTHONPATH $HH/scripts/pythonlibs
try to set in command line this:
cd (your houdii dir)
source houdini_setup_bash
export PYTHONPATH=$HH/scripts/pythonlibs
houdini
You get python from houdini libraries.
houdini is working fine except for icons
I`m don`t know what is But this is a tragedy.. Icons must be.. I`m never get this error… Don`t know how i can help.

It looks like your system is missing the python-libs package.
the file hmaster-bin is trying to locate is found here
/usr/lib/libpython2.5.so.1.0
or if you were using the 64 bit version of Fedora 10 + Houdini it would be in /usr/lib64/
Try this command to see if you have it installed
yum list python-libs
If not, install it by typing
su -c “yum install python-libs”
In regards to your icons, it could be further libs missing from your system or perhaps you ran Houdini as root once before. If so, then rename your /home/user/houdini9.5 directory and start Houdini as a normal user.

Pagefan, 10.3 is more stable, and, as i`m hear, 11.1 have some compatibility troubles with other software…
I`m use 11.1 and really happy
But two my friends, who use XSI, can`t run XSI on 11 and can`t find any workarounds (“oops..”).
But you right - 11.1 is really faster in many things. Very clean and nice distributive.

Alan, i tried what u said. python libs r installed except for python-libs.i386. so installed that and when i run houdini it's crashing. saves a crash report and closed. so removed the pythonlibs-i386. then houdini fires up with some error msgs and works without icons.
live-fx, setting the python path didnt help me too.
may be i should work on windows only

Hey temp, are you using Fedora 10 x86_64 with Houdini 64 bit?
If this is the case you should have downloaded the build listed as “Debian Lenny” with gcc 4.2
When you ran “ldd hmaster-bin” Houdini is finding all of your libs in the “/usr/lib” directory, which is where 32 bit (i386) apps find their libs in Fedora.

Debian is a distribution of Linux much like “Ubuntu” is also a distribution. “Lenny” is the build number. Some distro's use names as well as numbers. Fedora does this too; ex. Fedora 11 is called “Rawhide”.
Ideally what you want from a software package is an exact match for your distribution of Linux, which would also match your version of GCC (GNU C Compiler). You then would select the correct architecture, which is usually i386(32 bit) or x86_64(64 bit)
Side Effects doesn't provide builds for Fedora 10 gcc 4.3.2 x86_64 or i386, so you need to get the next best thing. In your case it's Debian Lenny gcc 4.2 x86_64. As you can probably guess gcc is backwards compatible, and typically it's all that matters, but that doesn't necessarily mean you won't have any issues. It just so happens that Houdini runs fine on Fedora 10.
You can also run 32 bit builds on 64 bit systems, but this usually requires additional software as you already saw with the previous build you installed.
